You'd think that, wouldn't you.

Blue Jays salary commitments for 2014, with only 14 players signed (need 25!) is $110,475,000.
For reference, this years payroll is $119,277,800.

That's a difference of only $8,802,800.
I think that AA - assuming he still has a job - and Rogers have some v difficult decisions in the off season. Melke Cabrera is simply not worth his salary and the BJ's would be far better to make Rajai Davis an everyday player. If Davis can hit even .260, he is a far better fielder than MC and he is potentially the best base stealer in MLB right now.

Dickey - is it worth eating salary to unload him? Probably, as it is with Melke. Do the Jays have pitching alternatives?

Reyes is doing fine and Buehrle - although overpriced - seems a workable 3rd or 4th starter.

Agree.

Melky is painful to watch...
He's probably the slowest outfielder in the Majors...
Just imagine how many extra bases Lead Foot is giving up...
I would bet money on RA Dickey beating him in a foot race...
I'm sick and tired or hearing excuses like "hamstring" or some such BS.
I'll bet you couldn't give Melky away at the trade deadline...
Give Rajai Davis Left Field on a permanent basis...
Just fucking do it already, Gib-Gib-Gib-Gibby Man.

Thing about RA Dickey...
He's always worth keeping as a 3rd or 4th starter...
But the Cy Young was a complete fluke based on a summer hot streak in the NL East...
Dickey will never come close to those numbers at Rogers Center versus AL East...
How exactly was his not predictable?
Ya think maybe there's a reason only ONE knuckleballer in the majors?

"Do the Jays have pitching alternatives?"

No, baseball is 90% Starting Pitching... and Jays are totally screwed there.

I'm basically a basketball fan...
And started watching the Jays regularly for 1st time since 1992-93...
BASED ON THIS GREAT THREAD...
And I just don't see why that boi AA is treated like some kind of demi-god.

Anybody can build a 0.400 team with Rogers money and a cellphone...
GMs are probably breaking ankles to take calls from AA.

Jays have Happ, Hutchison and Drabek due to return (if they want all three) as SPs with MLB experience shortly. Plus Romero if he can ever get his head sorted out and Morrow if he can regain fitness and form. Don't think they are totally screwed for 2014. Not as rich though as it seemed at the beginning of this season and I can well imagine further attempts will be made to improve the line-up through trades.

The Jays are idiots not to have Rajai in their lineup every day. This guy is the closest thing to Rickey Henderson that I've seen since... Rickey. He creates chaos every time he gets on base.

Right now, Reyes is hitting so well in lead-off that it would be shame to mess with him. But when he cools off, how about Rajai batting lead-off and Reyes hitting #2?

Based on what they have shown thus far, I think you have to add Rogers and Redmond to the mix of starting pitching. They also have a few in the farm system -- Nolin, Stroman, Stilson -- just about ready. Also, add Lou Perez, Wagner and Lincoln to the relievers.

Dickey and Buehrle [if they are still around] can't possibly be as bad 2 years in a row!

Not shabby, though not yet what is needed to be really competitive.

Although I have not been one of Rasmus's great admirers, I think he is starting to put it together and earn his reputation as a 5 tool CF.

If they can replace Johnson with someone who can perform to the level that was expected from him, they are probably only a 2nd baseman away from a solid team.

Yea, yea... I know... dreaming of next year to block out this year's nightmare.

And though his average has come down, he is still hitting a very respectable .280.

PLUS 3 stolen bases today after only 5 innings!!!!!!!!!!!!

They should also get rid of Drabek. Two Tommy John operations and a 8-15 career record with an ERA of over 5. Time to cut him loose, a high draft pick that will never make it.

Just awesome. Just as they pull out Melky, Jose B goes and gets himself thrown out of the game.
Don't get me wrong, the umpies's strike zone was about a foot off the plate. Really shitty calling.
But man. Use your head!

Make that 4. And he's induced two throwing errors. He's reached third each time he's been on base.

I heard that some PED suspensions might be coming down this week - will Melky be on the list? Don't know. And kudos to Colby for coming through...swinging for a hit not a homer.....and I have been maybe his harshest critic on here

I'm watching the Angels game and that Josh Hamilton looks lost and confused with a bat in his hand. What's wrong with the guy?

Why so down on Drabek, what's your hurry?

It's not like the Blue Jays wasted that pick, they traded for him, and the guy they traded is now hurt.

He's only 25, and since they've hung with him thru his rehab, why not find out what he's got?

We know he has good bloodlines.

Drabek is fine where he is. No one knows if he will make it to the majors again. Just let him try to get his arm strength back. You probably can't trade him as not many teams are in the market for and proven pitcher that has undergone Tommy John surgery twice.
The biggest problem the Jays have right now is Johnson do you start him or relegate him to the bullpen? Does anyone want him at the dead line?

I think you keep Johnson in the rotation to the end of the year......and out of sheer embarrassment, he can only get better...and if not, no qualifying offer..... When Drabek and Hutchison are ready...and maybe Stroman......go to a 7 or 8 man rotation in September. I have positive feelings about those 3 guys. And lets hear it for Todd Redmond...done a great job as number 4 starter (relegating Johnson to 5).

By the way, I was so sure Johnson would be great. A few years ago, he came here with the marlins and beat the Jays. Losing pitcher was some guy named Roy Halladay. And a year or so later, I was in chicago and he shut out the White Sox. Oh well, that was then and this is now:(

Yup. JJ has little trade value - although AA did wonders by ditching Vernon and Rios and their monster salaries. And you can't DFA a guy who was ERA leader 2 years ago after bringing him to your organization. It reeks of no class and pathetic desperation - i.e. the sort of thing that the guys will sulk about in the dressing room.

I'm not sure JJ CAN get better. I think he might simply be done.

A nice big suspension of Melke would work nicely. He's not bad, but grossly overpaid for what he currently brings.

How does adding 3 guys from one of the worst teams in Baseball make you a championship contender?
Exactly what I thought too. Trade deadline is coming. I hope AA does his due diligence and ship out these overpaid/overrated players of ours.

On a side note, Bautista needs to stop arguing balls/strikes and just play the damn game.

quick question about today's game....

I was at today's game, (oooooh we had awesome seats :p) but I was grabbing food when Edwin hit (what the monitor by the food stall said was a HR, then it was called back? Just curious if anyone knows why (?)

Ps - I'm liking Redmond and yes - definitely agree that Davis should be in LF full-time
