yes they may be EXTREMELY upset and distraught etc..... but not fair to compare to the loss of human life.
One of my co-workers was more distraught over the death of her dog than the death of her father. Still have a pic of the dead dog (ugly looking beast) when he was alive sitting on her desk.

You don't understand. Some people have an "unusual attraction" to their pets. For example, think of the "monkey lady".
unusual people have an unusual attraction to their pets

unusual people = emotionally unstable people

well it's not a person, but to a pet owner it's like having your child die. if you have kids put your self in her shoes. would it have hurt your biz to give her that one day?
Spoken like someone who has never lost a child. Your statement is offensive.

Consider who posted it.
Yeah, really. This is the only person on this board who I have considered blocking... everyone else has something to say that seems to indicate a thinking human being might be behind it. This guy is all about making the most offensive possible post. One might suspect he is a very lonely person who has no idea how to get along...

The issue is how OTHERS deal with death. People develop bonds of all types and when that is lost, they grieve in their own way. I understand both employees pain. I have lost a person after caring for them for months and I have lost pets. It is simply about loss. A great boss sees a person who is grieving and does what they can to support. A good boss treats everyone equal and does what they can under the rules of the company. A bad boss decides what or who is worth that grief and who they give more or less suppose to.

Sorry if I missed it. But did she come back and complain to you directly about your treatment of her? If not, I wouldn't even worry about what the consequence of your actions. The last thing you want to do as a boss is set up precedent for future situations. That's why there are rules and policies in the workplace. You could be lonely at the top cause you're a tough boss. You maybe not a NICE boss. But, good boss is needed in order to run your business smoothly.

Being a good boss also involves retaining good employees and making them feel positive about the place. As I said, to me, if the EA had otherwise been a great employee who I never had any issues with, if she came and said she needed a day off for some personal matter I wouldn't even ask why. I treat my good employees like adults.

The problem employees, I always suspect are trying to get away with something, get a different response.

I think you did the right thing. A pet (no matter how close the relationship is) is NOT the same as a human being.

That being said, this is also an admin assistant. Fact is, they are more easily replaced and the turn over rate is higher for an entry level position. I wouldn't give it a second thought. The fact that you even brought it up here meant you probably felt a bit guilty. Just send her some flowers on admin appreciation day and thank her for her hard work.

In your wildest fantasies do you actually imagine he could be a boss? Not just from this thread, from his body of work.

Ok, so you would mourn the loss of your dog more than the loss of your father.

I can understand that some people might need a day off to cope with the loss of their pet. Really.

And saying that doesn't make the loss of a pet the same as the loss of a child, that is just pants on head retarded. Some people need a year or more to cope with the loss of a child. A day for a pet--doesn't seem too outrageous.

Oh, and when I say "need", I mean, they get some sort of satisfaction/closure out of spending a day in reflection or whatever. Plainly it is a want, not a need. But I respect people's wants, if they are good reliable people.
