Psychopath/Sociopaths are not rare. Approximately 1% of the population are psychopaths. The myth that they are violent makes it seem so. The serial killers are the minority of the psychopath population. Most psychopaths are highly functioning by societies standards and pass as "normal" until you get to know them.

Robert Hare is an excellent source of information and considered the leading authority on it. He developed the Psychopathy Checklist/Revised ,wrote Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths go to Work and Without Conscience. He also founded Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy which is a online forum for information and support of those dealing with psychopaths. He is professor emeritus at UBC and has spent 30 years devoted to the research and understanding of this. A good site for links is www.hare.org.

We have all crossed paths with psychopaths tho sometimes we never end up on their radar. When you do, YOU WILL KNOW IT...

Sociopath and psychopath are two completely different "personality defects" (for lack of better terms). Both share some of the same traits but I think they are very different, though most psychopaths are also sociopaths. Sociopaths are very common. Read "The Sociopath Next Door" Martha Stout, ph.d
1 in every 25 ordinary Americans secretly has no conscience and can do anything at all without feeling guilty.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's even more common than that. I can sit at the mall for 30 mins and see absolute selfishness 100 times with no regard for the feelings and sometimes even welfare of others. I see it a dozen times on my drive home.

I know, there's more to sociopathy than that, but I bet some of those people meet all the criteria for diagnosis

Cat, sociopaths and psychopaths have a wonderful ability to initially hide thier true nature. The victims of these individuals initially blame themselves and not the sociopaths. They have the ability to make the victim feel like the guilty party. There is no cure currently available for this type of behaviour. If you are unfortunate enough to become involved with one just RUN.

The kids these days don't know how bad we used to have it.

I never knew my real dad. My step-dad never liked me. Not surprisingly really, my mum cheated on him, amazed they stayed together to be honest. I was lucky to live when I was a toddler as well, some psychopath was killing babies in our town and we had to flee the city. Even when I was in my twenties it didn't get any better. I got a little lost and nearly died in the desert. I got my own little gang going and started rumours we were going to overthrow the government. Bit of a mismatch group really, a couple of fishermen and a tax collector. Then I started getting all suicidal. Kept hearing voices in my head. Well I guess I was pissed or something in the end and handed myself into the guards. And they didn't just execute me they nailed me to a big fucking cross.

True words of wisdom great bear! The real problem is that most people don't know psychopaths seem very normal to begin with and come in all varieties. I grew up with one and thought I had the identification down pat. I haven't spoken to my father in over a decade but he still tries to cause damage in my life every chance he can. I managed to side step many over the years. Fast forward 20 years and another type appeared in a different sheep's clothing, a suit actually. Different approach, different demeanour, different red flags that I missed completely. This time my life was completely deconstructed from the ground up and I knew the only way to stop the damage was to eliminate the psychopath from my life.

The general population doesn't realize that they function amongst us using our base trust inclinations against us. They have an amazing understanding of how emotions can be used to manipulate, undermine and destroy but never experience the emotions themselves. We can see no logic for their behaviour and look within to find the reason. The key is to realize that there is no reason...

Cat, sociopaths and psychopaths differ. If a sociopath caused someone to die there would be no remorse. If a psychopath caused someone to die the psychopath would blame the victim. End result is the same. About 3% of the male population tend to have sociopathic tendencies. Less than that of the male population have true psychopathic tendencies. The real danger is the female sociopathic/psychopathics in society because they are fairly rare in the general population. That rarity gives them an excellent opportunity to exploit their victims.

Once you have been victimized by one or the other there are significant signs, signals and demeanor to become aware of. The best examples I can give you of a sociopath are initially their demeanor is no different than what could be described as "normal". Sociopaths true behaviour and intent generally has to develop slowly over a period of time to if you will "suck in" the victim. Psychopaths have some difficulty hiding their true personality and will on occasion "identify" themselves with flashes of a major peronality change . Unless the victim can initially identify this behaviour the victim is in for a great deal of trouble.

And I have disclosed its destination.

Uh oh. I feel a banning coming on. Anyone know how to put a black dot on the noses of the faces in the picture?
