"...amazing...", hardly.

There are no such things as 'types'.

Reads like the daily horoscope, is simplistic, general, and vague, masquerading as parsimonious, suffers from poor reliability and self-report bias.

And has numerous validity issues as well, and doesn't show strong correlations with other instruments designed to measure the same constructs.

Keep in mind, that the human being is more like an intricate puzzle, and personality is just one indicator of what makes us up...the MBTI cannot look at other measures such as aptitude, interest levels, and motivations. You need other tests and assessment tools to do this.

The MBTI is not a ranked scored item...it is not a case of you getting 80% on a test. In fact it isn't even a test...it is an assessment., thus some people do have issues with validity on it. But to say it reads like a horoscope is laughable, and misleading.

Pop Psychology for the corporate crowed :). Fun and great for launching discussions, but designed so everyone feels ok about themselves when they are all done. IMHO :)
It is fun...that why it is a great learning tool. Depending on the report that you receive, it will spell out how others may see you, and give out areas for growth. In corporate settings it is great to use, because employees often work in areas that are not their strengths, and in ways that are not conducive to them giving their best effort because their boss has a "right way of getting things done". This results in poor employee morale. The MBTI allows people to see their strengths and weaknesses and realize that other people may do things in a different way. Different workplace behaviours can thus become appreciated, and this increases morale and then productivity, in an ideal setting. It is not a "touchy feely seminar" to say that what everybody does is great.

I have little doubt that if I took it today, the result would, different as I'm different tha i was 30 years ago. it's a snap show of you a person on that day and an aid, nothing more. How much of aid, who knows. One different answer in the series of questions can change those that are on the cusp of the different categories, yet it only one answer.
Actually..MBTI theory states that preferences are innate, that is you are born with them and they stay with you for life. Some things such as mood when taking the assessment can affect the results you receive. What changes though are the adjustments that we have to make in life..Our family, schooling, work life, friends, and other factors lead us to make adjustments
An example of this is the guy who has a preference for introversion, and works in a sales department. He talks to people all day, builds rapport, makes cold calls, and when you as him what he thinks he is, he answers "I'm an Extrovert for sure, look what I do for a living". At the end of the day, though, he wants nothing to do with people, and needs downtime to re-energize. His evening is spent at home, alone reading. He has had to make an adjustment in his life to make a living, but he is still introverted.

You're born with them? Sorry. First you say they're hardwired and then say, but it can be different depending on mood, environment or training. A successful salesman who like to spends his private time being quiet, reading; complex, but not earth shattering or predictable.

You need not explain what the MBTI is to me Plan B. I possess the full test and a license to administer it, among others.

Perhaps you could define personality for us all. Give some evidence for its existence, explain the differences between Type Theory and Trait Theory, and then a little section on psychometric testing in general. Including a discussion on construct validity and criterion validity, and test/re-test reliability. Then go on to relate your opinion of the research conducted on how well the MBTI correlates with say The Big 5, or the MMPI, or SASB and Intrex questionnaires, to name but a few.

I stand by my appraisal. No better than the horoscope. You can get the same malarkey from any psychic reading or astrologer.

Guess what Dave..I the same certification. I won't waste my time explaining things already well defined and easilly accessible on the web. My original beef was that you that state its like a horoscope...looks like you wasted your 2grand getting your certification on a "horoscope assessment":D

Myers Briggs is just a tool. Its usefulness is in what you do with the information. Even if it's not 100% accurate or if there's better test, it can still help you understand yourself.

To me it has been an important tool in helping me understand myself and others around me. You learn not only that all people are not like you (duh), but the specific ways that people are not like you. It is quite valuable in the workplace and has helped me in many aspects of my career. My core MBTI type hasn't changed in the 25 years since I was first tested. However I have worked to develop and understand all aspects of my personality.

It of course is not complete as others have suggested and isn't intended to explain everything about someone. It may be one tool among many but it is a very valuable tool.

Ok, I'll just say Ontario.
I'm an ENTJ mutherfuckers. Was tested first about 20 years ago by a respected psychologist. I re-looked at my assessment a couple of years ago and was amazed at how spot on it was. I've just modified my approach over time to dial down that whole mutherfucker part of my personality in order to be more effective in my pursuits. I've learned to be more patient and to soften my approach. The test confirmed much of what I already knew about myself and highlighted potential deficiencies this personality type can have. I took the results seriously.

I think it's a good tool. But it's still just a tool and the results should be part of a broad assessment rather than relying on this one measure.

Because he accused me of trolling, when I was simply seeking informed opinions on MBTI.
Even so, you could still give an idea of what this test entails and still further your point of not being a troll. I'm sure I learned about it but it was so long ago, I confess I don't remember. Others have not been exposed to it at all.

By helping others to understand the test would probably increase the amount of discussion this thread will generate.

You make a good point, but you assume that I'm looking to generate a large quantity of discussion.

In fact, what I'm looking for is folks who already have an opinion on MBTI, one way or the other. For whatever reason, people tend to be anything but neutral with respect to this particular tool.
