I do find it rather amazing how most people are unable to grasp basic logic. This is the main problem I have with democracy... Giving everyone a vote, with no respect to their demonstrated qualifications.
When they coined the word naive, closet68 was the chap they had in mind. And the same with the word arrogant. (Also, berk.)Nope, neither are signs of competence, only entrenched power.
What I want is a basic IQ test, and only the top 25% of society gets to vote. Regardless of education, wealth, property, gender, race, occupation, political affiliation, etc. Also, regardless of age, because age discrimination toward young people is a big problem in the US.
Read Nevil Shute's "The 7th Vote". It describes a society in which every adult got one vote, but you got extra votes for passing exams, being married, running a business, etc, etc. The 7th vote was at the whim of the monarch. NS was all for it, IIRC - he being one of the people who would have lots of votes under his system.
The basic one-vote-each rule is fundamental to a democratic just society. In Canada, convicts don't have the right to vote. To me, that is the slippery slope - if the gov of the day can impose that on convicts, they can impose it on any group they don't favour. I say: one vote each -- no exceptions. (I'm not saying what percentile I am.)
