I do find it rather amazing how most people are unable to grasp basic logic. This is the main problem I have with democracy... Giving everyone a vote, with no respect to their demonstrated qualifications.
Nope, neither are signs of competence, only entrenched power.
What I want is a basic IQ test, and only the top 25% of society gets to vote. Regardless of education, wealth, property, gender, race, occupation, political affiliation, etc. Also, regardless of age, because age discrimination toward young people is a big problem in the US.
When they coined the word naive, closet68 was the chap they had in mind. And the same with the word arrogant. (Also, berk.)

Read Nevil Shute's "The 7th Vote". It describes a society in which every adult got one vote, but you got extra votes for passing exams, being married, running a business, etc, etc. The 7th vote was at the whim of the monarch. NS was all for it, IIRC - he being one of the people who would have lots of votes under his system.

The basic one-vote-each rule is fundamental to a democratic just society. In Canada, convicts don't have the right to vote. To me, that is the slippery slope - if the gov of the day can impose that on convicts, they can impose it on any group they don't favour. I say: one vote each -- no exceptions. (I'm not saying what percentile I am.)

Did you miss the part about the correlation between high IQ and liberal leanings? Philanthropy? Ever heard of the "liberal elite"?

Anyway, it appears common sense isn't your greatest asset. But, hey, coming up with strange hypotheticals is! Let's build on that...
Oh sure, start backpedalling from your original position - remember, your original thesis was simply this:

"What I want is a basic IQ test, and only the top 25% of society gets to vote."

You didn't specify liberal, or philanthropic, or any number of other useful traits. Just IQ.

Well, there are a lot of fucked up people with high IQ who aren't liberal or philanthropic. Kanazawa's papers show like a 6 to 11 point correlation - just barely statistically significant.

But that's obscuring my point, which was simply - it is pretty stupid to take yourself out of the voting pool in your own society, and any societies where only a subset of the adult population get to vote is a society that will tend to tyranny against those who don't get a say.

And to actively want to prevent some subset from voting is pretty vile.

Or, to bastardize the Boston Tea Party - no legislation without representation.

But hey, it's a free society and you're certainly entitled to your opinion, even if it's misguided.

I'll even go on a limb and assume it came from a positive place, but it's awfully naive.

I'll be open and tell you that I have concerns about giving women the right to vote. Is it because I hate women? No. It's because women automatically turn every election into a contest to see who is "more of a family man." If a guy cheats, it's awfully tough to get elected. Is that really what democracy should be about?

Switching to straight trolling? A little unsubtle there...

Now that the thread has been completely de-railed by the insecure Closer68, they should just leave those 7 TdF titles as is with the disclaimer that they were achieved with pharmaceutical assistance.

Closer68 is still smarting from losing his composure after being out-trolled by mrsCALoki in the Asian dating thread.

Really? You must not follow American politics... My comments apply only to America, I know Europe (maybe Canada?) is different in this respect...

So, now that you've been caught trolling, you're pretending not to be trolling?

Taking the stance that you have 'concerns about giving women the right to vote' isn't the position of a troll?

Your intelligence is truly astonishing.

But, whatever, post away, that's what the Lounge is for....

Yeah, sorry about that.... I've lived on several continents and find it hard to believe how stupid Americans are...

Let's take this in small chunks...

1) Would it concern you if people voted on the basis of fidelity? (I say YES, that's not a good metric)
2) Do you believe American women vote based on fidelity? (I say YES, just turn on the television)
3) If yes on both, should one be concerned? (Apparently we disagree here?)

I wonder. Women live longer than men. Baby boomers are the largest group in our society. I wonder if at some point as the men die off we will have a majority and vote to create large prisons for men who think we should loose the right to vote? ;)
