so you sign the agreement, that is still not the customers problem. you want a decent wage do something about it. i would suggest a strike but anyone can do it so that wouldn't really help at all. so i guess you are fucked cuz you are non skilled. no other job depends on tips for a person to live. you are incredibly replaceable that is why you have to deal with it.
i do big tips cuz i know it gets me served quicker. i tend to become a regular at places i go if i like them or they have something i like, i eat out a lot. so after the first 1 or 2 times i go there it gets around i leave about 30-40% for a tip and you would be surprised how quick i get my shit.
Strike? No union.
Unskilled? I (as do some of my co-workers) hold a Master's Degree.
If you were to go back and read all of my responses on this topic you would see that I have consistently said:
- The current system of tipping favours the customer as most establishments do not stand for servers displaying their displeasure of a 'shit tip'. Therefore, the customer can leave what he/she wants and the server will/can do anything about it.
- If the service has been sub-par and the tip reflects that, I do not feel sorry for the server; they have to step up their game.
- We don't know for certain what a fair wage for servers would be if tipping was removed. However, I would assume that the cost of an increased wage, as well as the attached benefits and dues (e.g. CPP and maybe even unions), would be passed on to the customer. Perhaps in the form of a service charge (a.k.a. a legally forced form of tipping).
- I am in favour of servers tipping out to waged staff that enhance thier job and/or the customer experience. But not those who are paid a salary or profit (i.e. management and owners).
- While the industry is moving to an '18% norm' I have always believed that 15% is fair. However, the increase is likely due to the increase in standard tip-out to support staff.
