i worked as a cab driver. worked every holiday and long weekend. people would tip more cuz they felt bad you were working on the holiday. now i am a truck driver and i work all those same holidays, don't get paid more and don't actually get to go home at the end of the day to visit or spend time with my family. hell i don't even get paid for stat holidays unless i work them and no time and a half for working on them either. the only thanks i get for working those holidays and making sure you got what you got on time when you need it is to get honked at, the middle finger and told i am in the way.I might add that servers generally work holidays, special days(valentines, mothers, new years) so the rest of you can celebrate and enjoy. I didn't see my mother for several years on mothers day, nor SO's on valentines. Basically I worked nights weekends and holidays. When I was a bartender worked so others could enjoy the playoffs etc.
And we always had to be nice, no matter what, no matter how rude, drunk, belligerant people became( and believe me there is no day worse than mother's day!).
So we received decent compensation. With a tax free bonus.
I've read sof studies where serving is ranked third highest for stress on the job. On a busy night we RAN. No scheduled breaks. Work till you are done. And not just the tables. After service we had the sidework to prep the dining room for the next day. Again this isn't whining. I chose to be there and deal with all of this because of the compensation. But until you have done it(walked a mile in these shoes) you really can't know how tough it can be at times.
Of final note when I receive crap service I don't tip either. And inform mngt why.
The professoinal in me hates to see others lowering the business.

oddly enough I was talking with a bell boy last week. He said that the people who often need his help the most, the elderly, are really cheap on tipping and often would give a quarter a bag or nothing for a tip when he took their bags up to their room. It got so bad that the hotel refused to take senior's buses as clients until they negotiated a contract where the tour company paid for the luggage to be taken up to the room at a flat rate.
$2 or $3 tip from each guy? That doesn't sound bad if you have 4 or 5 guys and they're each leaving that amount.Thils might be a little off topic, but it's alarming how many young people these days under tip or don't tip at all. I took a bunch of the young guys from work to one of my favourite restaurants, it's about 40.00 bucks a head. Now, non off make good money but that's besides the point. This guys all left like 2 or 3 bucks tip. I was embarrassed. The thing Im noticing though is that this seems to be the norm for younger kids. Even when I was 19 and first starting going to bars and barely had a pot to piss in, I made damn sure I tip the 15%.
I think the service industry is in big trouble because of this and better start thinking about including the tip in the bill as some off you have already mentioned.
I find it very amusing that you keep making sweeping judgements on circumstances that you know little about. 'Cry me a river?' Sure many people work holidays and deal with rude people. I hope they too are compensated for their patience and sacrifice (you don't sound like you'd make it). I'd like to see how patient servers would be if not for the incentive of a tip (I know I wouldn't be as patient if patience did not directly correlate to my income; it's one of the things I'm paid to be).oh poor you. There are many people outside the restaurant industry that work holidays and deal with rude people. If you work holidays, it is often your choice. I sure there is someone else that would be eager to take those holiday shifts if you did not want them

It is only a "tax free bonus" because you break the law and do not declare your true income.... but don't worry... times are changing as more and more people pay with plastic and leave a paper trail. the CRA is on to you.

Sorry, I can't agreee with the majority of your post (it actually confirms what many have said about 'entitled servers'). Sure there are times in which the tip is so little that you virtually serve that table for next to nothing, but if you use 'race' as an indicator of how friendly you will be, then you set yourself up for a bad tip. As a fellow server, I don't feel sorry for you when this happens.i have worked in this industry for many years, a few things i have figured out is not waste my time on certain races, i know this may be racist but unfortunetely it is is the truth. There are certain ethnicities that no matter how good the service is u r lucky to get 10% i dont waste my time on them and many of my coworkers dont either. I can tell as soon as i get to a table if its worth my time to be nice or not. Also many people dont realize that as a waiter at most places u have to tip out alot too. Many places you payout a % of sales, payout busboys, bartenders, maitre ds. Its hapenned to me were i got stiffed on a large party and ended up coming out of pocket for that table, which really sucks imagine going to work and having to pay to work.
i have a friend that works at terra and they tell me they pay out 8% of sales to the house, so if a costomer leaves them a bad tip less thand 10% they work for free.

Actually, it's the boss (both on-site and in the form of government) that talks upon hire; making you sign tip-out ageements and offering a wage 'below minimum'.tip should be a bonus on top of the wage. not half of the wage. no other industry is run like that. if you want a full wage you go talk to your boss. the more i hear people cry the less i feel like tipping and shockingly i am a huge tipper.
