I'm pretty sure you can't just give someone millions of dollars without raising a few eyebrows... and then getting taxed. big time.
There are no gift taxes in Canada [there are also no death taxes in Canada, without them gift taxes are not so much needed.]
As long as everything is above board [via check or bank transfer as opposed to via bricks of coke or cash] there is no problem. Sure if you go into a bank branch to do it the person you are dealing with will raise an eyebrow but fuck him/her. It isn't illegal.

Never let anybody get between you and your money. Never trust anybody including your bestest of friends and closest of relatives. Go get yours.

Sucks to be you. I would however never trust the bestest of friends. Parentals I trust. As for the third person, I not only know her well enough but she is old and wealthy enough in her own right not to have the motivation to screw me over and decent enough also. Keep in mind that I am not a very trusting person by nature. Although I don't think my bro would blade me, I wouldn't have that 100% level of trust to use him. As for friends, I don't even trust them to use my computer, let alone with money.

That being said I could understand how for many people, they would not be able to trust their parents. It is sad. To be honest, I could see you being in that category.

And I am damn happy about it. The system apparently has way more slaves than I could imagine. Kudos to whoever brainwashed people so much that they work, spend money on lottery and continue to work regardless of winning or losing.
What if your job involves having lots of extremely hot chicks service you over and over. Thought experiment.

If people had the option to remain anonymous when they win the jackpot, 100% would exercise this option.
You'd think so. I know I would. But in the UK (rest of Europe?) you can remain anonymous if you wish. Yet some people still allow themselves to be publicized.

I thought about it a bit more. If an elderly person were to give one child an entire lotto winnings, there might be questions from other possible heirs regarding state of mind or elder abuse.
So you do actually have a point.

Aside from collecting your winnings, getting a lawyer, accountant et el., you need to disappear. Shut off the phone, stay off the internet announcing you won and just get away for a month or 2 until things cool off and you have a chance to get a plan. I have the plan, just not the money.

Feel sorry for that guy in the paper, a little, but if you stick around and people hassle you, you kinda bring it on by not shutting them out when you need to. If they truly are "friends", they will understand once you get your head around what has happened and figure out your next path with the money..

I thought it took 4 to 6 weeks for the investigation to go through. If someone is on the lower end of savings it might not be wise or affordable to bolt for a few months.
I could be wrong. If I could, I'd get my passport first and the moment I can leave the country for a short while.
