I think the whole "having lots of money is a lot of trouble" is just what regular folks tell themselves to feel better about not winning.
At least it's what the Star tells regular folks. It seems like it was a slow news day or the writer is an editor's kid and they were doing him a favor.

I think it's what winning folks say to regular folks in a lousy attempt to persuade the regular folks that the winning folks have it rough too. It's the same as the "being beautiful is tough" argument. Sure, it comes with it's own problems. But these problems are far outweighed by the benefits!

What if you love your job?

You still can work (not take it too seriously) and enjoy the money imaginetivly....

lol that whole article is so stupid. I thought I was gonna read about how his family turned on him, or how he was kidnapped and his family had to pay a huge ransom

This is very true
I knew a guy who won the lottery, and he continued to work. He was the foreman at a warehouse, and loved his job. He didn't win 21m (I think it was 'just' a couple mill) but he won enough so he didn't have to work. He did anyway, took some time off, travelled, bought a nice new house, but he continued working at the same place. He had a family too. I don't know whether I could do the same, but he and his family never wanted for anything, kept many of the same friends, and he had a nice life. The lottery added to his life, more than made his life or ruined it. He died a while ago, had cancer, but I know he was happy until the end, and now his family has everything they need.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but the guy claims he only had $35 to last him the week...but he has a cleaning lady?!

If I won $21M, I'd disappear for a year or two with my family.
I am not 100% sure but I believe teachers do not get paid over the summer. The article mentions this occured in September right before he started getting paid again. I have spoken with a couple of teachers who mention things can get a little lean towards the end of the summer. If you are not working you probably tend to spend a little more than when you are working. I don't think the fact that he was getting towards the end of his savings at the very end of the summer is that big a deal.

Sad the government distributes the lottery monies like that

Most million dollar winners have serious problems with such wealth but would do great with 50 thou or so

100s of winners with 50k being happy instead of one miserable big winner is best for society but the government is greedy and wants to maximize profit instead of having a social conscience

To be fair, lottery winners mismanaging their money isn't the government's fault. It's not too hard for winners to set up some sort of system where the lump sum can be put into an account or portfolio and then a small percentage of it is dispensed as an allowance. Like what the guy in the article did
Generally, if you suck at handling your finances before you win the lottery, you're going to suck even worse after you win.

A lot of winners are groups of people so the big prize gets split up anyway. As far as social conscience goes, the government probably shouldn't be in the gambling business anyway - it's just another tax and it's actually regressive in that it's usually the people who can't afford it who get carried away buying long-shot tickets.

how come people go to the lottery headquarters downtown ,after winning a major jackpot, without wearing really big sunglasses,a baseball cap, a fake beard and a prosthetic nose...plus if you have a common name ( a la Dave Smith) i think you could get away anonymously with the win...no?
It's part of the rules that you have to identify yourself and pose for the photo ops etc. otherwise you don't get the money. I'm not sure if there's a way to do it through a lawyer or hire somebody to pick it up and then pay it over to you at a future date...

Unless it says that somewhere on the ticket before purchase, I can not see how they can force someone to pose or revoke the winning????

I am only assuming. I don't play the lotto. I prefer to make my money.

Where is RLD when I need him?

I would have my lawyer pick it up with a stern public warning any harassment will result in full legal action

Change my phone to private

Go into hiding

Quit my job

Yup, sounds like a lotto fun

Here would be my to-do list if I won $21 million:

1. Dont tell anyone I just won lottery
2. Ask lottery people to not make my name public
3. Tell friends/family I'm going out of town for a few months to travel
4. Change telephone number to unlisted
5. Invest $21 million in stocks and/or bonds
6. Open a new bank account in a town/city away from where I live (thats so bank tellers in my place of residence dont know how much $$$ I got)
7. Collect dividends from stocks/bonds and deposit it in new bank account
8. Return to place of residence and carry on business as usual

Yes, yes I did. I skimmed. Being single I don't have time to read every line, I mean it is a different girl every night, yes a picture of a different girl every night, on the internet, an endless supply.
So now I know in what particular retarded thing he did. Adults make sure their financial affairs are in order before leaving the country on vacation.
You're still thinking about pussy.

He had cash before his trip. He had less or little after his trip.

Sorry but one of the conditions of claiming your prize is that they release your name to the public (it's proof that real people win prizes).

That makes sense I 'spose.

In that case I'd go with what Carling said, grow a beard and wear huge sunglasses (and perhaps add some shoe polish) :D

that seems to undermine the whole point of enjoying the money
but if let's say you were prohibited from leaving Canada it's a good plan
