fucking Canadian universities are thieves... Education should be free like some countries in Europe where its free for citizens and foreigners alike.

As far as I am concerned you cannot default on your OSAP. Even if you claim bankruptcy, apparently OSAP is the only kind of debt you cannot write off and as such have to pay every single penny back- financial advisor at my university college was very clear about that. Sorry to disappoint...

yeah.. for real. All I see these days on CNN and american news are them wondering whether its worth for students getting a university education with all that debt one ends up with. America better change their education system or they're going to be left behind and going to shit. Fewer students are clever enough to attend university these days, let alone the number who choose not to attend because of hefty tution fees. Other countries with smarter students and free education are going to take over soon.

I work in retail so i work with many students. I find it terrifying the debt this kids are in. One guy told me it was like 60'gs. Then he told me his major or whatever and I was like "good luck finding a job with that".

Another student I work with also in HUGE debt, just finishing his computer enginering degree only to learn that the market for that is dying an the outlook for a job isn't great. Sometimes it makes you think if it's even worth getting a university education.

I hope that there isn't anything that you can legally do to avoid paying your OSAP loans.

You borrowed the money didn't you? Be a man and pay the $$ back.

You've probably paid out thousands to SPs over the past few years, but you want to welch on your debts.

Didn't you learn anything in school that would allow you to make some $$ to pay off your debt?

That's probably exactly why education shouldn't be free - as you state. So mooches don't waste the time of teachers, learn nothing, but then end up having money for booze and money for hookers, but don't want to pay back money they borrowed. That's why European countries are in trouble. Too many mooches.

I think there should be a concession for students who actually finish their education and get their degrees. Sure there are mooches, and time wasters.. They should have to pay full fees if they drop out. lol

if you are out of school for over 7 years and been in default for that long you can file bankruptcy on that debt, but its not like filing bankruptcy is some quick and easy free process, it cost money to file bankruptcy and these days even if your in default with osap for whatever reason they will take the money from your tax refund or worst just freeze your bank account and take the money that way. at this point your pretty much better off to give osap at least $20 a month for the rest of your life then have them access to the possibility of freezing your bank account.

yea selling your body is one option, but with so many people trying to get invovled in it thinking they can make quick money to pay off debts and fighting the high interest rates, how many of them really come out debt from osap.

There used to be. Basically, you've lost the generation war. A chunk of the people who will join this thread with the "pay yer debts" chant will have had student loans that they didn't really need, that were significantly slashed when they graduated, and their tuition in those days was much more heavily subsidized than yours was.

Now that same generation of people are looking at their government pension and healthcare entitlements, and demanding that spending on education be slashed so that their own benefits won't be put at risk.

That generation absolutely ran up the national debt to extraordinary levels, with their heavily subsidized educations, and CPP/OAS and EI benefits far more generous than anything you will ever get--but now of course they think you should pay, and that you're a dead beat if you don't.

Subsidizing education is one of those things that is a very obvious economic win. A better educated individual should pay higher taxes for their whole life and easily repay the subsidy on their education, but people don't want to think about it that way.
