The full question is this: If there was a test that showed, during the first month of pregnancy, that your son or daughter would turn out gay, would you get an abortion?

In a similar situation as they can now tell you if your child will be deformed, mentally handicapped, or whatever, and offer you an abortion as an option.

It's almost taboo to say anything negative about gays these days so I made the poll anonymous.

What did you decide to do, when you found out? I try not to dump on parents on TERB, so i won't.

Hey, I think it's idiotic and offensive that a woman can just go get an abortion at any time just because she feels like. In fact, I would call it murder, yet it happens every day.

That shows how much you really know about that part of life. It can be one of the most traumatic times in a women's life.

The question is so stupid as to beggar belief that any thought or rational intention was involved. Truly moronic.

Well put. Unconditional love is what you give your children, regardless of their future sexual orientation. How could you even think that anyways, if you are planning a family, to abort your future progeny on the basis that they might be gay?

While the question is stupid on the face of it, it is a question we need to think more about as a society. There is a good possibility that a gene or combination of genes is connected to homosexuality (despite the apparent darwinian illogic on the face of it) and sooner or later those genetic factors will be identified and thus can be tested for.

Now while I think the rational mind would immediately suggest the answer should be "of course not" we know that people will kill or abort children based on their gender, so the risk then occurs that they might do the same based on sexual orientation.

I think the broader question becomes do we place limits on fetal genetic testing to prevent this sort of tragedy?

Well put. And, giving Homer the benefit of the doubt that this was the question he intended to pose, I'd answer with a resounding maybe! The problem is that many good things can/have come from this type of testing. To place limits on it might deprive us of some very useful knowledge.

It is a very complex question and although I have looked at it in various contexts (often in the insurance law context) over a number of years, I too have no good answer to the problem.

The crux of the problem is that our technological capabilities have out-paced our abilities to morally/ethically manage them.

seriously, does amniocentisis (spellcheck) test for gay??
And that's assuming that there is a genetic predisposition.
