look....the old bitty is pleasant and inoffensive in a grandmotherly way, and that is fine perhaps for Britain, but we in Canada should really establish our own identity and find our own Canadian grandmother/ symbol of state. I nominate Clara Hughes!
Nah, I would rather have Valerie Pringle.

Although the Royalty is almost irrelevant today, that wasn't always the case. In the mid 14th Century Edward III took out a loan from the Bank of Milano to pursue his claim to the French Crown. It ushered in The Hundred Years War. The Visconti family eager to keep the French out of Italy were happy to oblige. Unfortunately for them he defaulted on his loan, bankrupting the family and plunging Europe into a full blown economic depression. And it didn't end there as The Black Death heaped plague upon an impoverished continent.

Edward's problems didn't end there. His eldest son Edward, know as The Black Prince, died before he could assume the throne. The posthumous Edward IV's son the weak Richard II became King and his regicide would lead to The War of the Roses.

Whitewaterguy, this has all been discussed at great length in other threads.

But to start with since you seemingly believe the monarchy is about to depart any second - what do you believe it takes to institute changes regarding the Canadian Crown? Do you believe those to be likely?
no polls eh? this seems to be a dead thread aside from you and black rock doing your jig

Except that in the last 20 posts, Aartie and i have only posted 6 times. The rest are others keeping it going as well. Damn facts getting in the way again. Apparently again you don't want to look up facts when Aartie even told you where to find the facts. You really are a classic lazy civil servant.

In spite of your tiff I'll keep this thread going for a long while, the British Monarchs are endlessly fascinating. Btw, I didn't like The Tudors couldn't stand the lead actor. Henry VIII shouldn't look like a member of a boy band. He should look like Quint from Jaws!

Not my tiff. I'd love to discuss the topic with real facts.

The series was good, but Tudor scholars whom I know said it did take a lot of license with facts and timelines.

Three things right off the top of my head: Jonathan Rhys Meyers doesn't gain weight as did Henry VIII (who can blame him) and Henry's health problems are more hinted at than obvious.

"Princess Margaret" is loosely based on Mary Queen of France and later Duchess of Suffolk (Henry's sister) and is portrayed having met her second husband Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk long before she did, and having married the King of Portugal?? and then murdering him.

And for the internationalists, Charles V never really mastered Spanish and certainly didn't speak with a Spanish accent.

It is definately more "bodice ripper" than historical play.

A strong case could be made that Charles V was an excellent sovereign. He did manage to delay an all out religious civil war by a century and the Holy Roman Empire reached its zenith during his reign. His diplomacy had a touch of humour to it.

"I speak Spanish to God, French to men, Italian to women and German to my horse."

I heard a poll quoted on the radio yesterday of Canadians who favoured abolishment by 52% to 37%for monarchists. ( I guess the rest don't even give a shit)

Who put out this poll and how recent was it?

According to a Forum poll done in January 2012;

There's an even split among Canadians on whether to abolish the monarchy, according a new survey.
Forum Research released data Wednesday showing 43 per cent of respondents were in favour of abolishing the monarchy after Queen Elizabeth II dies, 43 per cent were against it and the remaining 14 per cent had no specific opinion.
Some notable differences were seen among people from different regions and between those of different political stripes. For instance, 67 per cent of Quebec respondents favoured abolition. That was down to 39 per cent in Ontario, 35 per cent on the Prairies, 30 per cent in British Columbia and 28 per cent in the Atlantic provinces.
"In Quebec, of course, the monarchy has never been that popular," said Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research. "The monarchy has always been popular in the Atlantic, and still is, as well as the Prairies."
Not surprisingly, Bloc Québécois supporters were most supportive of abolition at 71 per cent. New Democratic supporters were the next most likely to answer this way at 49 per cent. It was 41 per cent among Liberal backers, and 37 per cent for those supporting the Conservatives.
Bozinoff said those who support the monarchy tend to have stronger feelings about it than those who support its abolition. An example of this, he said, is the fact that, according to a report in London's Guardian newspaper, two anonymous Canadians have contributed $12 million toward a new yacht for the Queen to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.
Bozinoff said with a majority of Tory supporters - 53 per cent - saying they were opposed to abolishing the monarchy, it could explain some of the federal government's recent moves, such as reinstating the term "Royal" in the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Canadian Navy, and putting more pictures of the Queen in government buildings. "That's because that's where (the Tories') base is," Bozinoff said. "Otherwise you would say, 'Where does this issue even come from?'"
