I think we agree on the idea that business has caused music to take a turn for the worse.

But I disagree with the idea that if you don't like something that you can extend that dislike to entire genres of music and music as a whole.

Also, yes lots of pop music is simple but often there's a nugget of cleverness that get's people's attention. While I don't care for a song like Barbara Streisand I can appreciate the ingenuity that it took to create a song that on paper would song like shit.

I will say this that with cheap ways for people to get their music out to an audience. I'm hopeful for a rebirth of music for those willing to go to the internet to find it.
i don't hate whole genre's of music because a majority of it is bad. i like some hip hop and rap guys but most i can't stand. so on like that with other styles of music. although i am not sure what dubstep is and i don't think i care to know.

Based on the votes cast for the youtube video, people young and old seem to agree that Nicki Minaj's song is absolute trash.

Shit music was there in the 'good old days too'. Its just that during that time, not many people knew about it due to lack of the media saturation we have now.

Nostalgia also kicks in as you grow older and then talk about how everything is now crap ( movies/music/tv shows/cartoons etc ). Thats natural but it doesn't change the fact that there is still great music created but it takes more time to find the gems because you are surrounded by so many choices/genres/artists. It takes time to really get into an artist imo. There are great albums made today and I am sure there will be people 25 years from now crying the same way about how everything is crap.

Goto last.fm, pandora, XM radio, YouTube, tons of internet forums...there is awesome music to be experienced. It all depends on you to actively invest in the time it takes to find the ones you like.

I like her song super bass. She's okay basically a hip hop lady gaga/madonna. But you have to remember her fan base is teenage girls.

Sinatra did okay without playing an instrument.

Do you even like hip hop? Based on the instrument comment I'm guessing no. Not that liking a genre means you should like every artist of that ilk.

She must have some talent to get past all the other people looking for record deals etc.
don't even compare her to Gaga... Gaga's got talent... she'll eat Minaj alive

Exactly what I say. Back in the day, good/modern/innovative music was on mainstream AM and FM stations.

Now commercial radio is just that, all about commerce and appealing to the lowest common denominator. Mega corps owe the radio stations and instead of the DJ's having input on what they play it is all pre-determined/programmed now and you hear the same playlists everywhere.

Have you people not heard Rebecca Black's Friday. It makes all other music before it a pile of steaming shit. JS Bach, Mozart, Beethoven to the Beatles and Elvis, all shit. Once I heard that song I tossed out my entire music collection, including some very valuable and rare records. I just listen to Friday over and over again. Even tossed out all my books, who needs the wisdom of Plato or the poetry of Shakespeare [even in the original Klingon] when you got Friday Friday gotta get down on Friday.

Anyone who thinks music sucks will like this one.

Pretty much tells it like it is, and to be honest as it has been for a long time.

i dunno man ... it's all good when it comes to music ... just a matter of personal taste

personally i like alternative/grunge/industrial stuff, never cared for rap (except for some Beastie Boys, if that counts), hip hop, and such

i like different stuff when i'm driving or when working out, otherwise, i don't listen to music at all

there's lots of amazing great young talent out there these days, turn your radio of those 70's and 80's classic rock stations and look elsewhere, and you shall find as long as you have an open mind

I think there is still creativity in electronic music. Esp Dubstep.

I should also mention the groups who compose those awesome movie soundtracks. Hans Zimmer etc.

Last week there was a little bitch on SNL that got on the show only cause she posted a few songs on Youtube that got alot of hits.. She performed her lame songs and BOMBED! Got ripped by everyone in the media and online. Goes to show that talent is not needed anymore to get on TV.

Those that don't have it to begin with won't last.. Look at pathetic Ashlee Simpson. Her rich dad hired people to write songs for her and put out some albums.. Even got her a tv show. She rode her older sister's coattails.. Bombed on SNL did a short gig on a TV show, did a Broadway show got knocked up by a has been rocker douche and now is just a stay home mom. All that in less than 10yrs..

How funny as well that J. Timberlake does not even bother to continue his music career anymore since he's gone into acting as well. Must be due to the fact that he never wrote his songs to begin with and was only a pretty boy that could dance good. Good on him i guess for taking the 'Marky Mark' route to Hollywierd. We need kick ass LIVE bands like The Pretenders, (RIP the dead bassist and guitarist in the clip) or The Cars back. Compare those 2 clips to the shit on SNL now days or Nikki Shite Minaji.

And to think a band like those 2 would not get signed today?! Fuck the world is fucked!!

sinatra was an average singer at best. anyone can sound good doing what he does. how many clones are out there right now that do the exact same thing with the exact same sound and he wasn't even the original of the era. he surrounded himself with talent so his averageness wouldn't be exposed. if was the legend he created of himself that drew people in.
Lord, you see some amazing things posted on this board.

Normally I don't agree with Simon but there are people who didn't like Sinatra. Heck Micheal Buble could basically fill in for Frank. Not to mention some of his most famous songs were not even written by him (e.g. My Way is Paul Anka). Heck his first album was all cover songs.

Fly me to the moon, i've got you under my skin, that old black magic, new york new york all covers

Wrong.. He had his voice.. Vocals are considered an instrument.
And what an instrument Frank had!
Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra is coming to town next month. Talent is alive and well!

Similalry, I do like Arcade Fire and the Arkells.
