Bad Experience at the Hilton Falls

Normally I don’t complain about food, especially if someone else is cooking it for me but really felt the need to share my experience with you so hopefully you don’t have the same bad luck as I did. I travel to the Falls and Niagara on-the-lake quite often. During my visit this time around, I had a craving for seafood. I’m mostly vegetarian with the exception of seafood and I decided I wanted to sample the menu at Watermark, a fallsview Hilton restaurant.

So the place is beautiful, no doubt about that. We were seated right away and were lucky enough to get a coveted window seat. The menu all looked SOOO good I had a hard time deciding on what I wanted. In the end, we settled for crab cake appetizers and a seafood platter for 2. At $18 for a plate of 2 tiny crab cakes, I was expecting a symphony in my mouth. They really were the worst I had ever tasted and full of bits of crunchy shell (mine are WAY better and I am no chef lol!).

No big deal, I was looking forward to the lobster tails, shrimp and mostly the scallops!!! The dish was a bit on the small side for the $150 we paid but the lobster was cooked to perfection. I ate that first and it was one of the best I had. I then cut into a huge scallop in anticipation of my favorite shellfish tasting like heaven. Well, not so much. Every single scallop was filled with grit. It was like they had been rolled in sand. I’d had better at Red Lobster – and that’s not saying much lol!! Okay, so then I move on to the shrimp. No taste at all.

Switch to the veggies. Asparagus is my favorite green stuff. I gently cut the tip off and placed it in my mouth – again, sand. None of them had been properly washed. I’m a bit odd in that if a texture that isn’t supposed to be there is there, it throws off my appetite. I was done with dinner. The manager was kind enough to take 50% off my bill and offered me a free dessert. I LOVE creme brulee so that was the choice. Again, I was pretty floored that they could mess up sweets. It came in a pie crust and was freezing cold in the middle!

If you’re a seafood junkie like me or like your veggies without sand, don’t waste your money in the Falls at Watermark Hilton!!! HOF had suggested I try somewhere else and I should have listened to him!!! Next time HOF I’ll pay attention!!! Our cab driver suggested Remington’s for my next trip, have any of you tried it? It’s on Victoria St.

Hope everyone had a terrific weekend, besides the bad food at Watermark, I had a blast and great food at other places too
Hugs, Tristan

Yep me too. I have had terrible food there as well. It is clear they spend more time on promoting their restaurant's decor and the view to capatalize on the location than they do about serving excellent food. I will never eat there again.

Thanks for the heads up! I find most seafood in Ontario to be tasteless, side effect from growing up on the east coast and having it cooked less than an hour after it comes out of the water. However, there's a place in Stouffville (surprisingly enough because there's not much else) that has great shrimp, scallops & lobster. It's called the Stakeout and while they specialize in steaks, their seafood dishes are the best I've had in Ontario. They have a fine dining room and a bar for more relaxed evenings.

Thanks for that! I will put it on my TDL for sure!! I would have loved growing up on the East Coast, yum!!! I find most steak houses do pretty good seafood so at least my date can have the meat and I can have what i like :) Thanks for the suggestion sweets!

Thanks Tristan!

I have heard from a lot of people that they are not really impressed with anything in Niagara Falls. Years ago when I went down with friends we had steaks at one of the "mid level" restaurants and it really was not worth the money we paid. It is all a big tourist trap. They do not have to worry about repeat business so they probably do not care about going the extra distance.

Hey mister "New to Toronto"! While I do agree with you ad Thunderballs, there are MANY places off the 'map' that are worth visiting. The Flying Saucer for example is a cool, retro-diner place that still has a $2.99 breakfast special that is good (for a greasy spoon) and it looks like a space ship! I LOVE Taco and Tequila which is a tourist trap but run by real Mexicans (One of my favorite foods) and they cater to both true Mexican foodies and American taco fans :) I like both.

Plus on the way to and from Niagara, I usually stop at The Lakehouse just outside of St. Catherine's. REAL yummie and reasonably priced too.

Truth be told, the best seafood (for the price) I've had was not that long ago in Etobicoke. A place I've passed a few times and always thought it was just a banquet hall. It's called the Golden Lion and they are only open Fri & Sat for lunch/dinner. It's a Ukrainian place and they have Polish, Ukrainian and Canadian food along with oodles of seafood and everything in-between. For $40, I had one of the best seafood platters I've had outside of Maine. 2 huge lobster tails, the best shrimp cocktail with massive prawns, calamari, 2 large skewers of scallops, mussels, roasted veggies...it was massive. I'm a little embarrassed to admit for the price I thought it was for one person so my man ordered another dish. The waitress looked at us both funny and proceeded to move us to a bigger table tee hee!!! It was a LOT of food. WAY better than the Watermark. I won't be visiting there again.

Now I'm getting hungry!! Tee hee!!! Hugz, Tristan

Thanks for the reviews, Tristan

Far more articulate and informative, and a whole lot less self-indulgent, than most male reviews of SPs on this board.

FOR THE BEST FOOD IN NIAGARA.....go to Brasas, across from the Hilton.

It is one of those nice Brazilian meat places that gives you a great selection of meats, salad etc!!

I'm always very hesitant to eat at a hotel restaurant. I always figure that being a hotel is their forte, not being a restaurant. You want a great restaurant, you go to a stand alone restaurant.

Yes, I know Susur Lee opened up in the Thompson in NYC, and many other chefs of note are now operating in Hotels, but still, something goes against the grain with me.

BTW,

If you want really good seafood in Toronto to to Chiado on College Street. It's fantastic.

or Kaji - which is Sushi, but also several courses of seafood.

Neither are for the light of wallet however.

You must try the assorda (dry soup of seafood) at Chiado. Wear stretchy pants.

Amazing food quality at Kaji, and you can hit Elite Retreat for a little pre dinner fun.

For fresh fish...my vote goes to Joso's at Av and Dav. Fresh and simple.

Next time you go to the falls. Check out a restaurant called AG. Its located at the bottom of the sterling inn and spa. Its a local gem. Most tourists don't go there because its like five minutes away from the falls and therefore doesn't have a falls view. Enjoy.

TeasePlease - I had something simular in Spain a few years ago and would LOVE to have it again. I'll keep in mind the visit to Elite tee hee *evil grin*

Zz000ter - I think that's a terrific idea!!! I however don't think I'll have oodles of time once my agency opens. Haven't found the right mix of staff so I'm going it alone for the first bit on the phones. Yup, Golden Lion isn't the prettiest of places (located off a side street in Etobicoke, factory-like area) but it's a hidden gem. Just wish they were open Sunday for dinners as that's usually when I have time to go out :)

Joop - I'm back in the Falls in November. I'll for sure look this place up and it doesn't hurt that it's at the bottom of a spa lol!!
