I'd rather endure a Wasabi enema than live in the "city"

What this article misses is the reason why people move out to Suburbia are for many reasons outside of "more house for your dollar".....thats just the iicing on the cake.

I hate the cramped "city" living; I just cant relax.

I hate public transit and rather enjoy driving so live in the city or not I'm still owning a car and I'm going to drive it.

The inconveience is dreadful because its far too busy...theres always "something" going on in the city and nothing would irk me more than being held up on the weekend when all I want to do is go home after running errands.

I like the idea of going about my business without having to pay for parking.

I like that my neighbor isnt right in my face.

I like that I can go outside and detail my car on my driveway

I like having a spacious yard where I can shill out and BBQ

All the "things to do downtown" doesnt impress me none at all...it gets old...it all gets old. You're not going to pay a premium to eat at all those fancy restaraunts all the time and you eat at enough of these joints and you realize all they are selling you is a baron plate with a side of POMP...pass. I'd rather have a satisfying steak at the Keg than buy some over priced high falutent diatribe...pass once again

The very idea of living my entire life all within a 10 minute walk of home would drive me up the wall

I dont buy that traffice is worse in the burbs than the city nonsense.... I know Toronto WELL and still get held up on just about every street because they lack lanes and are packed.... I get around teh burbs in a cinch and am not stressed or annoyed at all.

....list goes on and on. I'll pay a premium for that.

Jan. 25, 2004...In 1996, (the latest year for which complete comparable data is available)...
While I don't disagree with your intent in posting this, a six-year-old article that uses 14-year-old data isn't necessarily the strongest reference. ;)

While I won't argue with everything else you stated (though the thought of it is a fate worse than death to me) and I'm not quite sure of your spelling.....You clearly have no taste in restaurants. The Keg is Ok at best. About a 5.5 out of 10, just slightly ahead of Swiss Chalet, but miles behind the neighbourhood Greasy Spoon.

For the price of a meal (and I use that term losely) for 2 at "The Keg" I can go to Lee, Kultura, or the Wine Bar and enjoy a meal that was not prepared by a "line chef" from the nearby High School. Sometimes, less is more.

Dude look...I've dined at many high end restaraunts and quite frankly I am not impressed... Its arrogant pomp at its best.

Sure the chefs have a more impressive resume and yes the ambiance is better. But what are you really getting? seriously now...When you look at what you pay vs what you get vs satisfaction and quite frankly its a rip. You pay more for some fancy fandango bullshit that really is only a little better than the chain food and you are not satisfied at all afterwards. You gotta go to McDonalds afterwards for god sake just so that you can say you ate.

When I go to a restaraunt... I go to eat...I dont give a rats ass about the artisic presentation. You wanna look at something interesting? go to the museum or the art gallery. I could care less about the ambiguosly gay high strung chef and his fragile ego who is ironically quite uncivilized in his behaviour. I wanna eat a meal and be satisfied.

I never once said the Keg is a high end restaraunt but then again I've never walked out of the Keg dissatisfied or regretful. I however have been to some of those high end restaraunts and walked out rather perturbed, still hungry and full of regret.

Good food doesnt have to be complicated nor does it have expensive either....

So...5.5/10 (or whatever you want to call it) or not...thats what it boils down to for me.

I like downtown living better than suburb, but dont give a shit about fancy restaurants. I think less driving is good for both health and environment.

Good food is an art form. No different than painting, sculpting, architecture, or engineering.

Guys like Susur Lee, Jamie Kennedy, Claudio April, Mark McEwan are artists who work with food.

Some people can understand and appreciate it, others don't get it and go to Milestones and The Keg to have their food prepared by 17 year old line chefs cooking by pictogram.

A typical, homophobic suburban attitude.
What exactly did I say that was homophobic? "Ambiguously gay"???....whats wrong with that? Maybe you are homophobic for automatically assuming that that was meant as an attack against gays...is there a little bit of guilt deep down inside there?

I'm pretty sure the food in most restaurants is actually being "prepared by 17 year old line chefs cooking by pictogram" - the only difference is who drew the pictogram. You don't actually believe that the big name chef is personally cooking your meal?

Good food is good food Kirk. Its there for consumption; always have been, always will be and that you cannot argue. I could give a rats ass who prepared it; its worth a squat...really, because whats important is the satisfaction. Your remarks discredit every home cook out there who is no different from your average 17 yr old when it comes to "credentials"....grandma, mom, uncle so and so who makes a mean rib....yeah they are no Susur but their food is damn good and bring back awesome memories....thats what its all about

It is different from painitings and architecture. Paintings and architecture LAST for decades, centuries...paintings and sculptures were made to be visually inspiring....architecture becomes part of a city scape which is to be viewed and admired as such....and so long as nobody destroys any of it, it will continue to serve that purpose. Food? okay it looks pretty on the plate and then 30 minutes later where is your artwork? being broken down by acids in your stomach....well I guess it will be new form of "art work" when it comes out of your ass an hour later.

Sorry, but I think the direction the culinary field is taking these days is a load of crap.

Susur Lee is getting his ass kicked in NYC.

And I don't believe that calling David Adjey "ambiguously gay" is good for your health.

Five years ago when I bought my ravine lot in Woodbridge, I thought I was the cat's meow. Since then, I've grown to hate it, I've been stuck in the Black Hole (Steeles - 400) for what seems like hours. There are too many imbeciles in fancy cars who think they own the road. My area is at the mercy of developers who wantonly raze gorgeous green space to built squat monster homes. I miss the empenadas and the corned beef hash I used to get at Mingo's. Getting downtown used to be a short drive to the Yorkdale Subway. Now I have to plan ahead if I'm going into the city. The fact that I've yet to hear the supposedly state of the art sound at the 4 Season's Centre depresses me. I miss my city lifestyle.

Btw, Toronto Life has proclaimed The Queen and The Beaver on Elm St as the best British Pub in the city, has anyone been there?

The menu looks impressive...rabbit pie, I will be there.

Yup, I live in the City and I can get almost everywhere (except CB) by walking, biking or taking the TTC. My pet peeve is that there are too many damn "porch people" and "patio people".

BTW: The City has passed a bylaw to restrict the number of cars one can park in their driveway. Wish they would pass a similar bylaw limiting the number of people who are allowed to sit or sleep on porches.
As a porch monkey I find both your use of the outdated term porch people deeply offensive. Never mind your attitude towards the porch monkey community.

Well according to Kirk if its not a pretentious overpriced piece of "Art" (and I use that term loosely) on a plate then its not good
I find the Keg (and the like) to be overpriced frankly, especially if you consider what you get for your money.

You just are easily impressed, I'm not.

OK Well I think we'll just have to chalk this up to different strokes for different folks...

When I go to a restaraunt I am looking for a satisfying meal...when you go to a restaraunt you look for a song and dance...

Agree with Major Major....the pretentious food trend is laughable.

Ooohhh look....a custom grilled sandwich with a little hat on the top and some 'salad' ( as in a couple of leaves ) on the side. That will be 15$ please.....FUCK OFFF !!!

I mean, I would gladly pay 26$ if the sandwich is tasty, has some soul in it, satisfies my hunger and tastebuds. Is that really too much to ask ? Its the food that should matter first and foremost...everything else should be a bonus.

As a side note, I'd reocmmend to eat some streetfood in Asia for a change, granted it can make you sick sometimes, but take a fucking chance and have some of the best meal you will have...ever. Then come back here and try to eat some these 'gourmet' delicacies. You'd feel like you ate a fossil
