How can all this stuff be for FREE? Somebody must be paying for it. Is it like "free" TV where I pay Rogers $50 a month plus extra pay for extras?
I think I read on the Google website it's free USA/Canada till the end of the year (.02 for other countries).
I don't know the Google business model in detail but maybe it will be the same as it's search engine (advertising) or a small fee like a couple of bucks per month. Either way it's WAY cheaper than the Rogers Home Phone which I was paying $30/month for BASIC service.

I tried and it works well. It is free for calls between Canada and USA and within during 2010.
Canadians can not yet sign up for upgraded srvice, 1 Phone Number, Caller ID etc. It is not yet launched here.
However one can try it. Sign up for google, try to place a call from the contact section links, you will be taken to a link for downloading the Voice program. And Bingo!

What? So, TV, telephone and Internet will all be FREE? Some of us are currently paying $100 a month for this stuff. Will Google also provide a free 50" HD Plasma TV to us as well?
TV will not be free, perhaps some channels will, but you will be able to watch just about anything on a pay per view basis.

Just installed it on my Linux PC here in Buffalo NY.
Took < 1 minute to D/L and install the VIOP plugin Gmail provides.
Gmail walks you through the easy setup process.
Got a Google phone number and all.
When complete, made a couple test calls and it works perfect with great sound quality, better than Skype I might add....

An extra # can be useful but it's the international calling which is the best savings. Can call from computer or phone. Canada is free. Verizon charges like 50 cents a minute. It will be nice to bypass those fucks.
