I hope there are many, many successful lawsuits filed, and hopefully quick settlements made.
I hope NOT. Any settlements will be paid out of taxpayer's money and no lesson will be learned, will it? It's like me being rear-ended by some drunk, then his mom pays for the damage to my vehicle. Sure, I got reimbursed, but she got screwed and her son has no repercussions and is likely to go drinking and driving again. Disciplinary action is what I would call for. Disciplinary actions for the one's who made the decision to unlawfully detain these people.

You have to be a complete idiot to be in that area today. Why would someone want to take a stroll down there on this particular weekend knowing the place is crawling with police. Protesters look like everyone, so how would the cops know who the badasses are.

Everyone there deserves to be arrested for being a moron.
What about the people who live in that area? What are you suppose to do? And what about the people in the media - it's their job to be there. The police should have let the people who wanted to leave, just leave. What was the point of detaining them in that area in the rain?

ok off to bed soon...
McGuire keeps saying they had lawfull grounds for this mass arrest.

I would say to him, that will be for the courts to decide.

McGuire would not answer why by standers were forced to stand in the rain for hours, after the troublemakers where sorted out and sent to detention. These bystanders were doing nothing but waiting for a bus, looking around or walking home, Total BS.

Compensation should also involve knowing that some cops where seriously disciplined, charged, or fired.

I'd settle for cash settlements AND serious disciplinary action. But as much as these people deserve reimbursement, so do I NOT deserve to be penalized for the police force's actions. That is the problem with taking law enforcement to court. Taxpayers pay, not the individual officers who committed the act.

Hey Captain Fantastic.....you are pathetic. What freedoms are you talking about? Freedom to stand around like an idiot with all the shit that went down this weekend. You deserve to wake up tomorrow with pneumonia.

If you live in the area then you knew that it was not going to be like the MMVA awards. You should of stayed home or got out of town.

This is in sharp contrast to the way the polce handled the tamil protestors who blocked Toronto streets and major Highway. There was no rounding up large number of Tamils when they did their protests. I agree those that were involved in the violence of burning police cars, smashing windows should have been arrested and stopped but the police did not interfer with those during the violence. Todays group weren't burning or smashing and the police rounded them up, this is coming from media who were at the protests. So the police reactions to protestors who block streets is different depending on whom is watching from above.

Lol, being an idiot or protester or just plain interested doesn't justify taking away your right to not be arbitrarily detained. Yes, they should have stayed away. And yes, they do have the freedom to stand around like idiots with all the shit going down.

awww some protesters got wet?

excuse my while I cry myself to sleep...
I was thinking the same thing. What a bunch of wimps and crybabies. Some innocent folks got caught up in a dangerous situation and were released when the police felt it was safe to let them go. Now all the fearmongers are crying "police state", "violating their human rights", blah, blah, blah.

I spent the entire weekend babysitting my friends store front on Queen. I watched stores/offices get destroyed. I watched officer stand there and take hours of verbal abuse without retaliating. I'm sorry, but they did a fucking amazing job under the stress/conditions.

I don't really care if 'innocent' bystanders got arrested. If you didn't want to be in trouble, stay away, simple as that. I was quite impressed with the amount of restraint the police showed time and again during the entire weekend. I also appreciate the extra measures they took to ensure the safety of the actual citizens of toronto.

Saturday evening, I even passed the medical station they setup for the officers, there were several hundred being tended to by medical personnel.

Chief Bill Blair for mayor. Congrats to the police. Of course, the fearmongers are screaming "police state". The only people who compromised my rights and freedoms are those asshole protestors and vandals.

Let's call it like it is, most of these people were gawkers and most had cameras, they wanted to snoop and be part of the action, so they got detained for a few hours, no big deal.
Some were detained for 18 hours without proper accomodations, food or water. -- Notice how no news media were allowed to see and film the holding area

Either your facts are fuzzy, or you're coming on this board to lie to others.
LMFAO. Yeah, I joined in 2002 because I knew this situation was going to happen and wanted to be ready. Good cover, eh?

I guess the constitution doesn't apply to gawkers then? We can call it the "Gawker Exception" to the Charter of Rights. I'm sure the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled on it in one of their important judgments lately. Oh and we can throw in the "Angry Police Officer" exception to the Constitution as well? The Charter doesn't apply when the cop is pissed off?

You're not a lawyer, are you? No. I kind of guessed that.
