I wouldn't say we have the most talented team. My friends and I all agree that European players are in general more skillful and technical than North American players.

North American players like to dump and chase and run people over playing ugly. Thats why they prefer the small rink so they can smash the skill players into the boards.

European players prefer the big rink to allow more room for skill and flare.

We do have a good mix of skill and size, and much more depth than most other nations.

Well who can argue with that. End of discussion.

In what basically amounts to a single elimination tourney (after the seeding from the Pool Play), ANYTHING can happen.

exactly. no real time to practice, no real team bonding, and celeb status for guys on team canada... not really the best scenario for stars to perform at their best.

Thanx for clarifying. Is that fair though??!
Seems a little too forgiving IMO
Sure it is. Just think of a team like Belarus knocking off the Russians or Sweden in the qualifying round. A team like Russia (who lost to Slovakia) can play real bad through out the round robin and all of a sudden pick it up and win it all.

The potential for gold is there with Team Canada. We just have to realize the potential. It's sad that anything less than Gold will be a big letdown. Can you spell P-R-E-S-S-U-R-E?

Enough with the fancy fucking crap and play the fucking game like it is the Stanley Cup Finals !

Ga-damn fucking shit I am sick of this fucking superior attitude we have over teams other then USA and Russia and occasionally Sweden, Finland and Czechs.
I couldn't agree more. They were beat to the puck just about every time, outmuscled in the corners, outplayed along the boards, I bet they didn't know what hit them......They probably went in expecting another finland type game.......

considering they've only played two full games?

There is talk about no more NHL in the olympics...I say "good riddance". Our "national" hockey team should be a "team", not a bunch of superstars from 20 different teams. I tell you, I was surprised when I first heard about nhl players being let into the Olympics....I thought they were for amateurs only????

I enjoy the best of each country being represented... so in a way I disagree with you. However, I don't think the NHL should 'break' during the Olympics. but, then that hurts NHL's bottom line- which is what the debate is over.

I would like to see the NHL end their partnership with the Olympics, and those NHL players that 'want' to play for their country take a leave of absence and cut in salary to do so for the Olympic 2-3 week period. Of course, the money hungry Canadians our own hockey players are, we would have to resort to sending an amateur team with no real NHL stars. but, That's fine with me, because we would still ice a team that can compete with any out there!!

ok, 3 games in now, and PRESSURE should no longer be a negative factor, if they picked the right individuals... ie, consider certain players and how they handle pressure: Crosby, Richards, Morrow, Keith... vs. Seabrook, Doughty, Bergeron.

Crosby, Richards, Heatley, Iginla, Keith and Morrow absolutely thrive under high pressure. hopefully it's enough to balance out those that are blanking out and shutting down...

I'm not saying that North Americans dont have skilled players because they do. But our sports analysts are always quick to point out how much more physical North Americans are compared to Europeans.

But if the Euro's do so well in the NHL also, they must have something to make up for that lack of physicality. (technique?)

Hockey is a contact sport and our style is very effective, thats why the Swiss for example have all these Canadian coaches now to teach them the grittier side of the game.

Take soccer for example, the England national team are not known for their technique and skill but for their physicality. They dont do so well because soccer is not really a contact sport, but countries like Brazil (known for their technique and skill, but definately not for their physicality) are the most successful team of all time.

But in Rugby, England always do well in the world cup playing ugly and physical because it is a contact sport, while New Zealand (known for their flair and skill) dont tend to do well in the world cup tournaments even though they always come in as favorites.

Then you get a team like South Africa, who in the last world cup could match Englands physicality, and also had better technique so they beat England in the finals.

I prefer the smaller rink, there is more action and more crash and bang. Watching European hockey played on a larger rink is like watching soccer on ice.

It doesn't take the most talented team to win the gold medal. In order to win a gold medal a team needs a hot goalie. Players have check their egos at the door and except their roles. Team chemistry amoung the players and the heart and desire to win it all. Plus some very talented players would help but if they are not part of the team chemistry, they are useless. Steve Yzerman did not build team Canada to be the most talented team, he built a team he thinks that will come together during a short tournament.

haha... I remember studying this in Kinesiology. It comes down to:

Genetics.

If you look into the backgrounds of European and former Eastern Bloc countries, most of the higher performing hockey athletes come from the most elite of athletic parents... not necessarily so in Canada or the US. In fact, who on Team Canada has an olympic gold medal parent? exactly. no one.

This is largely due to the fact that western civilization in North America is much younger than in Europe, where they hold to a strong social status structure where athletes marry athletes, musicians/musicians, actors/actors, artists/artists, monarchists and noblemen and so on... In athletically strong 'gene pools' it only makes sense that the predominance of traits associated to predetermine excellence in athletic ability is very apparent.

Our Team Canada 'stars' are mostly kids from families of hard working individuals that may have a lesser degree of athleticism (adequate, but not elite) in their genes.

without wanting to rewrite an honours thesis, here's a quick comparison of 2 Cdn vs. 2 Rus players and their brief 1st gen heritage...

ie, Ryan Getzlaf- from a farming family. brother plays CFL football
Sidney Crosby- father Troy played backup goalie in the Q...

vs.

Alexandre Ovechkin- the son of Mikhail Ovechkin, a former professional soccer player, and Tatyana Ovechkina, who won two Olympic gold medals while competing for the Soviet women's basketball team

Sergei Gonchar- father was an olympic wrestler, mother olympic gymnast... marries an Armenian olympic figure skater, therefore Sergei's Pennsylvania raised children will also carry excellent athletic genes even further...

just sayin'...

Funny, that's what the Nazis said...
It's one thing to study and discuss the phenomenon, it's quite another to put this into practise as a government policy.

Alright CANADA vs. USA today the winning team will move on to quarter finals.
Ok, here is some free advice from Coach Rockslinger. The Canadians must put pressure on the American's defense. Two men in forechecking and one man in the middle. The American defense is weak and will crack under constant pressure. P.S. I have no clue what I just said. Insert smilie here.

Sports is also their escape. Sorry to be so blunt but who wants to live in Russia? Also, unlike North America there are little other career options in Eastern Europe, especially for women. Sorry if this pisses off at least one TERBIE.
