Post again when the results of the "investigation" are released.
Again, to this point, NOTHING has been found to support the allegations that were made against them. Despite the fact that many of these allegations would have been immediately obvious upon inspection of the facility.
It`s easy to accuse, hard to disprove an accusation.
Nothing to see here, folks. Move on.
Now try this

Toronto Humane Society officials arrested, charged with cruelty to animals

Kate Hammer
Toronto — Globe and Mail Update

Police have arrested the Toronto Humane Society`s president, chief veterinarian and three other senior staff members and charged them with animal cruelty, six months after a Globe and Mail investigation revealed widespread troubles at the shelter.

At the same time, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals executed a search warrant at the shelter`s River Street facility late Thursday afternoon.

Humane Society president Tim Trow is facing Criminal Code charges of animal cruelty, conspiracy to commit cruelty to animals and obstruction of a peace officer. If convicted, Mr. Trow faces a maximum penalty of $2,000 and six months in jail for the animal cruelty charges, and two years in jail for the obstruction charges.

Head veterinarian Steve Sheridan, shelter manager Gary McCracken, manager Romeo Bernadino and shelter supervisor Andy Bechtel have also been arrested and face animal cruelty charges.

All of the above, as well as the Society`s board of directors, are also being charged with five counts of animal cruelty, a provincial offence under the Ontario SPCA Act (as opposed to criminal charges).

Looking bleak.

Don't expect any serious penalties being levied on this bunch, except maybe their professional careers will be in tatters. Maybe they can get a new one started at Timmies.

The Toronto Humane Society was hijaacked by some radicals a few years back. They signed up a large number of people and showed up at a dull meeting of the society with an overwhelming majority, voted themselves into power, and then fired all the people who used to run the humane society.

The ex employees have ever since been protesting and calling for investigations into THS, apparently with good reason.

Hopefully they purge all the radicals out and return the society to the people who used to run it.

I wonder if it is a powerstrugle between the SPCA and the humane society.

I looked into HSPCA and decided not to have anything to do with them
because in my opinion they are cruel to cats (they declaw them).

Ditto. I hope they get convicted and go to jail. Where do animal abusers rank in the jail pecking order? I hope it's not too far from rapists and child molesters.

This is disgusting! I stopped supporting them as soon as rumors of their lack of compassion came to light.

They made a mockery out of their mission statement which is “to promote the humane care and protection of all animals and to prevent cruelty and suffering."

Same here i used to split my donations between the OSPCA and the THS. Now it all goes to the OSPCA and it'll be that way until the THS gets its shit together.

People need to stop buying pets like they are toys.
Yep - people should rescue animals from the OSPCA or other adoption groups. My adopted kitty is sitting on my lap purring away. wouldn't have it any other way.

Did you look at the picture gallery on the linked article?? HOLY SHITE!!! Click "In Photos" down the right hand side. What kind of person would allow such conditions to exist?

I am far from being a wacko PETA-supporting animals-are-more-valuable-than-humans weak-stomached softy, and yet I am REPULSED by those photos. REPULSED!!!

It didn't happen overnight and I simply cannot understand how any sane, rational person could allow such conditions to exist anywhere. It would be repulsive if it was a mentally disturbed bag lady who had animals living like that in her basement. But these are PROFESSIONAL animal welfare staff. Veterinarians and full-time THS staffers. Given that these conditions did not happen overnight, they are, in fact, criminals.

From looking at those pictures I think that any reasonable person, in particular animal welfare professionals, if faced with financial or personnel shortages that resulted in conditions like the ones in the picture gallery, would have taken action long ago. Invite the cameras into the building to let the public and city hall see the conditions, and demand help!!! Unreal.

Strange, I went last week to view the animals but a notice at THS stated that adoptions can be done by appointment only??

Usually, THS is open for public viewing especially on their 2-3 day Adopt a Pet drive.

I guess what happens behind close doors is not a pretty sight!

Sadly, when you mix politics, power and misguided passion towards saving all animals even if euthanasia is the best means, then you have done more harm and suffering towards the animals.

Tim Trow had ample opportunity to fix THS but instead chose to rule his little fiefdom and threaten insiders and THS supporters with litigation.

There is a saying.....what goes around comes around......

I will not support THS until they clean house and protect the innocent animals left to die painfully and needlessly.

the THS has adopted an appontment only system , has had it for years actually, they need the time to properly interogate prospective pet owners, to ensure the owner meets their conditions

It's good to see the board charges as well, even if it is only under a provincial offence.

Hopefully the THS can get their sh#t together with new leadership. IMHO, there is still a need for the services they were meant to provide.

The Humane society will never recover from the bad publicity of these arrests and after viewing those photos and reading the accompanying article I'm not sure they should be trusted again. Time to start a new organization from the ground and get it right from the start.

Giving the SPCA, a private organization, the power to lay charges, rather than having a specific provincial/state Animal Welfare Enforcement office has to me always seemed most peculiar.
