I stopped given money some years ago when I read a similar story about the current crackpots taking over the board of directors. The whole thing is disgusting.

On a somewhat related note, a couple of days ago, I adopted a cat from the Toronto Animal services shelter on the Exhibition grounds. Unlike the human society, the city’s shelter looks very professionally run. I would recommend them as a better option if any one has a lost or injured animal they want to turn into a shelter (see http://www.toronto.ca/animal_services/index.htm). As long as they are healthy (or not unhealthy in a way they cannot treat) and not overly aggressive, the animal can stay there indefinitely until they are adopted. Despite this, I was impressed at the conditions the animals are kept in with volunteer’s coming in every day to walk the dogs and take the cats out of the cages for some play time, and a chance to wonder around a bit.

Having been a volunteer there for years, and having talked openly and frankly to the people that work there, i can say this

the management is corrupt, and were appointed unfairly, they are living on fat salaries and driving fancy cars while paying the people that work with the animals and with the public next to nothing ($10 an hour)

employees work under constant verbal and mental abuse from management, staying in their jobs because of their love of animals, and desire to do the best they can.

no one is happy there. employees feel dis-empowered and are disillusioned by managements lack of concern. they simply have been bullied into keeping their mouths shut. open your mouth and push for change, you lose your job.

someone needs to get in there and reform the place. the people running this "non-profit" need to be de-throned, and the employees on the ground level given the chance to voice their ideas regarding necessary changes to the legislature and the way the place is run. ask anyone that works on the ground floor. they know what needs to happen to make the place run more smoothly, and create a better atmosphere for the animals.

it really is a sad state of affairs.

I am currently fostering a cat and her kittens from Toronto Cat Rescue. Not the same organization, but I rescued the mama cat from euthanization and brought her home to have the kittens.

These ladies work VERY hard to find homes for all the cats. When I was at the shelter, I was stunned at the amount of unwanted cats. The sick wing had the cats in cages with meds and instructions on their charts, and the cats were well looked after and loved.

Perhaps if spaying and neutering were more economical, there wouldn't be such a high volume of unwanted animals. Kudos to the ladies at this shelter. What a difficult job.

My babes are ready to go now. I'm hoping they all find loving caring forever homes.

Yes, so the mouse can breed and make more mice, which means we have to buy more micetraps

Brilliant!!!

A few weeks ago, I heard some HS nutcase on the radio and couldn't believe what she was proposing: like mouse traps are inhumane. She was calling for someone to invent a trap that will not kill a mouse, but just capture it, so it the can be released back to the nature! WTF! Some people totally lost their sense for reality!!!
Uh, they've had humane mouse traps for quite some time already.

If that's what someone wants to do, then I don't have a problem with their sense of reality.

She should just feed the mice after all they chose her as their new mom

im with james here.
im not sure i call that losing touch with reality as much as putting an end to unnecessary suffering. if it is in our means, why not?

unfortunately, the reality our culture has become accostomed to includes inhumane treatment for creatures big and small. when we start to consider even the life and experience of a mouse is when we can return to a world more balanced IMO. the fact that someone who suggests we think about these issues is called a nutcase makes me very, very sad. its time we woke up and started caring about these issues on a large scale (factory farming of meat) and a small scale (there are mice in my kitchen, i want them gone)

don't get me wrong. im ok with things being killed. its a part of life. i eat meat, i've killed mice. but i am all for methods that do not prolong the process of suffering for animals.
