Do you mean Toskala was the key because he didn't play?
Toskala would have played just well enough to lose.
The defence as a whole played better but I still think they gave up the blue line too easily; when the other team's carrying the puck in, the Leaf defencemen would back up and gave too much room to the other team. They seemed like they're afraid getting beat so they didn't want to challenge the puck carrier.
Penalty killing must also get a lot better, they were bad last year and this year have shown no difference, so far anyway; hopefully with better goaltending from Gustavsson they can do better. It also helped last night when the Ducks took most of the stupid penalties.
I'd really like to see Burke accquire a good puck handling/play making center as they are awefully weak in that position. I never thought I'd say this, but Sundin would probably be a good fit right now, provided he hasn't totally lost his skills and speed.
