Watched the first 2 episodes last night and the new series looks like it has some promise.

I'm surprised Michelle Yeoh's character got killed off in the second episode. Maybe she comes back in flashback scenes or something.
The new captain Jason Issaacs didn't even appear in either of the first 2 episodes; so, it looks like he's going to be a minor supporting character.

I read somewhere if the series is renewed, his character might be killed off in the second season.

Klingons look okay to me. You have to remember the original series had a budget of 100 thousand dollars an episode;so, some some of the props were a bit cheap looking and they didn't have the time or budget to make Klingons too exotic looking.

I like the lead character, Sonequa Martin-Green. She's got some edge to her and can be bad ass when she needs to be.
It's nice to have a Star Trek series on air again after all these years

I doubt that Kilgore Trout, you don't bring in an actor of Jason Isaacs caliber and make him a minor character.

I finally got a chance to watch to watch the first part of the pilot and I'm more than satisfied. Michelle Yeoh give the series as good a start as possible. Yes there were some inconsistencies but as long as the series stays true to its source, it doesn't bother me.

I tried to watch it yesterday.
Lasted 20 minutes & just could not take the lame dialogue, which was 19 min. too long.
Yeah, me too. I really sat down with an open mind, but the show is unwatchable. And I was a fan of the original and TNG.

Long time fan as well, yes I'm a Trekkie.

I remember back to the first two TNG episodes it believe it was farpoint station and introduced Q, lots of people and questions and backlash but it turned out okay and a New Generation of fans were born. Then the other spinoffs after had their own paths ... DS9, Voyageur, Enterprise... all the movies ... it's a big franchise... so you continually need content, which has been lacking in the series department, until now.

The new series, only two episodes, shows promise but there have always been critical Star Trek fans that break things down to minutiae detail ... just let them run with it, it's their show and they know they can't please everyone but I will still watch. I enjoyed Sonequa on the Walking Dead and look forward to seeing how this turns out.

I think it was the second or the third season of the TNG when they retooled. Better story lines, more character development, less overacting and they got rid of the damned close ups- must've been all the cash they were blowing on the nose hair trimming.

I just saw the third episode of Discovery and I've got to say it was through the roof fantastic. Loved every second of it.

The first two episodes have a very tight Star Trek corporate feel to them and the series needed to break out of that straight jacket to take it's game to the next level and did it ever do it tonight.

In my opinion, this episode copies a lot of the look and feel of the Battlestar Galactica series from the early zeroes and that's a very good thing.
There's a certain amount of crude, vulgar trash talking going on in this episode that never would have made it in one of the earlier Star Trek series.
Rekha Sharma, who played Tori Foster , the assistant to President Laura Roslin in BSG, appears in tonight's episode as Commander Landry and she gives Michael Burnham a royal trash talking when she gets her alone.

Jason Isaac finally showed up in tonight's episode and he puts in a very tenacious performance as Captain Gabriel Lorca.
He is very unlike any Star Trek captain you've ever seen before. He's unconventional, eccentric, slightly kooky, slightly weird, and brilliant all at the same time. He saves Michael Burnham's ass from life in prison because he sees something in her. He tells her off the record that her behaviour in the opening episodes was unconventional and also correct given the circumstances.

The acting in this series is very, very strong and very impressive. I've never seen a Star Trek series with acting this strong before.
There's a new openly gay character in this series, - Anthony Rapp playing the character of Lt. Paul Stamets. He's a real bitchy drama queen who bitterly resents the authority that Captain Lorca exercises over him and every scene he's in is very substancial.
Sonnequa Martin Green, in my opinion, is through the roof fantastic as Michael Burnham. I totally love her character. She might be the best actor ever in a Star Trek series.
Jason Issac as Captain Lorca was excellent also. He put in a very impressive performance.
I saw him in The OC series; and for some reason he never really grabbed my attention in that series; but, I like him much better in this role. Maybe he's an acquired taste.

Looking forward to episode 4.

Jason Isaac has built his career out of playing outsized characters with chips on their shoulders, Captain Lorca is going to be radically different from his predecessors. You could see it from his first encounter with Burnham - he had a tribble on one side and a bowl of fortune cookies on the other. He would have made an excellent 007, had he gotten the chance.

From the pilot to the third episode, the set up is brilliant. Captain Georgiou was a benevolent figure who upheld diplomacy above all else - it cost her her life. Captain Lorca is a student of Sun Tzu - I pity the fool Klingons!

And in two weeks time we'll get to see Isaacs as General Zhukov. Never in my wildest imagination did I picture Steve Buscemi as Khrushchev.

I think your right. During the success of the first season they changed or transformed based on viewer likes, ex. data, but they also got comedic... thought Riker felt the brunt of not being up to par.

Episode 3 ... enjoyed the direction it took, unexpected would best categorize it .. biology and physics.. interesting twists with what went down. Overall can't wait for next episode.

Kilgore summed it up nicely.. I thought he was gay but still unsure... btw, you figure they would have better flashlights? Lol

Guillermo Del Toro has been loyal to Jones, he's appearing in GDL's latest film. It's got heavy Oscar buzz.

It's not hard to figure out what he's playing.

I thought episode 3 was a good start. The beast from the other ship felt a bit like the original show to me and Lorca is a solid character. I don't think they are quite there yet but they've done enough for me to watch ep4.

Apparently the naysayers are being drowned out, it looks like a massive windfall for CBS-Space. Jonathan Frakes will be directing some future episodes.

Nice to see Doug Jones (Lt. Saru) finally getting lines.

I saw the 3rd episode. At least there is a story somewhere there. I have a problem with starships that are supposed to be BEFORE the time of Kirk and Picard somehow looking more advanced than those. But that is the world of sci-fi. It changes as our present day technology changes.

Unless they snatch utter defeat from absolute victory, the success of ST:Discovery is all but assured. Jason Isaacs has won over the harshest critic of them all, the editor of Rotten Tomatoes.

But there are some who still wonder what a Jason Isaacs 007 would have looked like. The story is well known, the final cut was Craig vs Isaacs. Daniel Craig was outstanding in Steven Spielberg's Munich - perhaps the famed director's best film. Naturally Spielberg was going to support his boy. But it hasn't stopped fans from speculating.

- I agree, that is the problem with ST prequels, you have to almost "dumb-down" the tech to make it fit canon. Although I though Enterprise did a good job with that.
- I am not a fan of the new Klingon look, however, it can always be explained as they were an isolated group, unaffected by the augment virus.
- I don't like the more dark-tone of the series, I know DS9 had it too, but at least it still felt in the same series to TNG; Discovery just fells like a more chaotic universe where humans aren't as enlighten as we are made to believe according to the other series.
- I think they should have set this at least 50 years ahead of Nemesis that way all the tech would fit nicely, holo-communications, Klingon look, experimental propulsion, Tribbles, Voles, and Gorns.
- No problem with a diverse cast, seriously, I remember when people had a problem with Janeway being female. Still surprises me how people loose their shit over stuff like this, get out of your little bubble once in a while. Trigger warning and spoiler alert, that science officer, Stamet is an openly gay character.
- I'm not a total believer that this show will last past 3 seasons. It just doesn't have that ST feel to it, which will alienate (no pun intended) Trek fans. But if they put "some really hot chicks" as Phil C. McNasty wants (and as every typical tv/hollywood execs do as well), they could pick up his demographic to help carry this show.
- I'll still give it to the end of this season to see if it will improve, but I know they will have some stupid cliff-hanger at the end.

The last episode of ST:D was significant. They introduced the great Harry Fenton Mudd, and again perfect casting. Rainn Wilson.

I'm getting into Discovery. The last few episodes have been very good. Really liking Isaacs as Captain Lorca. Still don't like the new Klingons. You can't discern their emotions through their facial expressions due to the heavy prosthetics the actors are wearing.

And I have a feeling that the female Klingon prison warden who got winged in the head last episode will be back. And she's going to be pissed off.

Also, with Discovery being set 10 years prior to TOS, I expect to see a young Spock, or Cadet Kirk.
