Third time I believe. The judge said the Government hadn't offered any reason why there would be harm to anyone if she took the oath veiled, so there was no reason not to apply the law as it now stands. That law requires the Government to do everything reasonable to accommodate differing religious choices and practices when administering the oath.

If she's wiling to be identified without the veil, we can easily hear her say the oath with it. As the courts have ruled, it would be against the law to force her to remove the niqab she chooses to wear because an official whose duty is to help her insists on imposing his idea of her religious obligation. Or his boss's. Or Our Dear Leader's

The encouraging thing is that she still wants to, in spite of the hypocritical bigotry she's faced from the highest in the land and the reactionary repressiveness they've encouraged and aroused among ordinary Canadians.

Of course we shouldn't be surprised if Harper and Kenney take full advantage of the technicality of the law's wording; that the Minister sends a letter inviting the successful applicant who has met all the requirements to take the oath. She'd be unwise to hold her breath waiting for it.

Not only are these guys repressive cultural barbarians, they have no understanding how an adult can lose with class. To themselves, they're just losers, unless they stop that poor woman.

Obviously no one cares about Canadian values and traditions. We might as well just say fuck it as everyone that comes to Canada just seems to run all over our culture and traditions and then expects us to kiss their asses.

Canadian values and traditions say that we don't tell people what hats they can wear, or what clothes they wear.
Canadian values used to be known for tolerance, even for really stupid religious practices as long as its not harmful.

All religions are stupid, but you can't legislate people out of them.

Are you going to force Sikh's to take off their turbans, or force Hasidic Jews to cut their hair and let their wives grow theirs?

Showing your face at a citizenship hearing has ALWAYS been part of our tradition, destroying that to accommodate 1 or 2 people is ridiculous. Pretty soon we won't be able to fly our own flag for fear it will offend a few people.

Decisions like this will only translate into more votes for the Conservatives in Quebec.

Munclair is going to drop more seats.

Bullshit. Our tradition has never required a bare face. I guarantee that a great many people have sworn the oath with beards so thick that their mouths could not be seen or with hair covering parts of their face.

Our 'tradition' also is that the courts decide legal matters and in this case they have made their ruling.

Yep, a country that works by rule of law is shit. You're free to move to Syria at any time.

You have a career ahead of you with FOX news. A little wild and loose with the facts followed by totally groundless unrelated paranoid conclusions. Until racist Harper stepped in the court was confirming the identity in a private room with female witnesses. That was proposed but Harper insisted a wasp oriented bigoted solution to trample religious rights.

Harper is turning into quite the little fascist with little respect for people's freedom. He started segregating Canadian citizens into separate classes with different rights. The 5 year absent rule for voting was a start - how can your rights be limited by an arbitrary rule by some narrow minded bigot - it could easily be changed to 1 year, a week - whatever the fuck whim hits a PM. Harper then tried to revoke citizenship for a canadian born citizen (I doubt the courts will back this). A landed citizen of 8 years told me that visiting home involved now involves additional paperwork and interviews that native Canadians do not have to follow. Again another segregation of who is really a Canadian as set by WASP Harper. People should realise that you can't give into racism just because you are on the right side of the dividing line.

Add the security spy bill & the prostitution legislation and you have a dangerous divisive racist. I's scary to think what twisted racist will do with another majority government.

And native Canadians preferred when there was no Christmas trees but I guess times change as the country grows.

Kids still can and do.

Of course the old Canada banned my Irish ancestors from many public places. Sort of like the changes we've made since then.

If some people are allowed to cover their faces, then we should allow all people who want to cover their faces to do so regardless of the reason.

How do they cross the border with covered faces? Or is it the case of selective modesty? They want to get in, they compromise. Once they're in, it's fuck you Canada.

Its not that hard.
Take them to a room with a female passport officer where they can show their face.

And who is paying for that extra cost to accommodate these people who have asked for the privilege to become Canadian ??
You want to stay here and enjoy all the benefits of our country, abide by the rules

So, the passport picture does not have a cover? How very immodest of her. That's practically, well, pornography.

I have no idea what your values are, but Canadian values are obeying our laws, and respecting the Charter above all other laws.

So far Jason Kenney and his boss are doing neither, Zunera Ishaq is calmly following the law and Charter which both give her the right to her religious beliefs as she chooses to practise them. Kenney has tried to dictate to her what her religion is and how to practise it as if he was some sort of self-appointed Muslim Pope, while Harper ignored the words in the citizenship act and like a tinpot dictator highhandedly ordered his preferred dress-code as if his word was the law. Oh yeah, another Canadian value: Parliament makes our laws by open voting, not some guy in the PMO.
