They are as private as a group can be in this environment. Privacy & no cameras is a #1 rule of SC's so while there is public access - it is essentially a private public venue if that makes sense.

You only have to give your 'nom de plume' out to people with whom you are comfortable. As far as a badge if you choose to wear one, might I suggest 'Hello my name is Fuji'. You will fit right in !
