It's actually much safer to trim down by exercising or working out and turn fat into muscle, then to just drop weight & you're a lot less likely to go back to your old physique.
It is impossible to turn fat into muscle,,
I need to build more muscle! how do I do it?
Weight resistance training is the only way to gain more muscle.
If it's a brisk pace, walking 10k is the same aerobic value as running 10k - and it's much better on the knees.

.
Do you have any studies to back that up?

Not quite. Walking 10 k at a brisk pace burns approximately the same number of calories as running 10 k does. Walking also burns a higher percentage of those calories from fat. However, it would also at least twice as long to walk 10 km than it would to run the same distance. So, running has a much better bang for your buck time wise.

Walking is better on your knees, but running has a MUCH greater cardio benefit. A more intense form of exercise will always put more stress on your muscles than a lower intensity work out. When you stress a muscle group, or something like your cardiovascular system, it becomes stronger. You are also strengthening your leg muscles more by running, and your core muscles because they stabilize your upper body as you run.

You give your metabolism is bigger boost by running as well, and you will continue to burn more calories afterwards than if you hadn't run.

Sadly, I have gone through one to many "fit-fat" cycles in my life. When I get back into shape, I have found that NOTHING melts fat like running and weight lifting.

True, but you minimize the harm that running does to your body - will you be able to continue this when you're 70 years old?
Will you even be able to walk?
We should look at long term fitness.
I agree with your points about getting a bigger bang for your buck from running and I'm glad you acknowledge that briskly walking 10k burns as many calories as running 10k does.
If anyone wants a reference to this, just google it. I remember reading "Aerobics" when it came out about 40 years ago and it still holds up.

I'll back ya up Brill...

Before I was a cyclist, I started my weight loss program by walking 8-10 kms every day. (Including weekends) I got bored of that after about 2 months so I tried to run again (I used to run YEARS ago...) but alas, the knees would start to SCREAM after just a km or 2, (knees are shot due to ACL injuries while skiing as a much younger man), so I jumped on my bike. The rest as they say is history...

Regardless of what you do, walking, running, swimming or cycling or on one of those fancy schmancy machines at the gym... a good cardio workout of 30 minutes or longer will do wonders for your "waste" line and and for the ladies, it will really tone up your legs and Butt!

Well a little update on the war (and a bump to boot.)

Got myself some board shorts and hit the pool. (The girl in the shop asked if I wanted a Speedo, I just looked at her and asked if anyone would want me in one) I think the lifeguards were drawing straws as to who would have to fish me out of the pool...See I haven't swam in about 26 years, so yeah there was a little struggling, but at least I refrained from the doggie paddle. Found it really tiring, as I could only make one length before needing to break before returning...And I had to use my ventolin. I also thought fat was boyant!

Also went shopping after work for some new jean....I'm actually down to a size 40!! Check it out...Warning, it includes my ass....

I haven't been in a 40 since university....And back then I wore my waist band under my gut. Now I wear it over my guy!

And if you have any comments about them being Wranglers...Shut it, they're good working pants.

The other thing is while I had the camera out, I grabbed a pic of the leather blazer I bought last month....

Sure it doesn't fit perfectly, and the sleeves need to be shortened....But you think when I first saw this jacket, I couldn't even do it up. Back at the XMas party, I wore it open as it pulled when buttoned up. Sure there's room for improvement, but still...

That's funny, I bought a new pair of Wranglers this week too.
First pair I tried on fit perfectly, the cheapest jeans you can get at $18 - even less than what I used to pay 20 years ago. They weren't even on sale.

Just thought I'd post a bit of an update....

Had my doctor's appointment last week, so in advance I thought I'd just on the scale at home. 229lbs, only be semi confirmed at the doctors at 233. (So the home scale isn't that far off). My first round of blood tests all came back good. He was quite surprised and pleased with the weight I have already lost, and set a target weight of 210lbs for when I see him in March. I also spoke to him about depression and my lack of a sex drive. So more blood work, a reference to the local mental health unit, and some Cymbalta later, I'm off.

Well the first couple of days of the Cymbalta were a little weird, what with arbitrary bouts of drowsiness, and nausea, with a side order of dizziness and insomnia thrown in for good measure. But after about five days, most of that's passed. But during some private time, I may have encountered one of it's other rather frustrating side effects...

But as for the weight loose, I checked on the home scale earlier this week. Down to 224lbs. Yeah, a little more than what would normally be considered healthy, but like the dancing fat man in my sig, I have lots to loose. If anything, I'm actually eating more now that I was a few weeks ago...Just my choices are a little better. And CG, you were right. Haven't had a regular coke for over a week, and damned did it taste funny when I drank one today.

Now where I'm really seeing the effect though is in the fit of my cloths. A lot of my older stuff just hangs on me now. The swimsuit I bought last month just about slipped on in the pool the other night. I dropped from a XXXL sweater at work to a XL. And I had to get two new belts....38s!

burt-oh-my!

Living healthy is a mindset... It shows up in everything you do throughout your day... if you have that mindset, the results can be quite rewarding!

I know I have posted this before, but with the search function SNAFU'd, I couldn't refer to the previous version...
Cycleguy - your pics have like totally motivated me. Good job. I want to get a bike this spring, I love bicycling.

Glad this post is getting a bit of a bump....I got off my routine over Christmas and have put on a bit of weight so am looking forward to being outside more come Spring and will be heading of to the pool this week as well - Blank Dave gave me that inspiration to get back into that!

PS Also use Livestrong.com and mapped out my walking and cycling loops so I know how many calories I burn etc. Great site for keeping up the motivation and tracking calories etc - a good balance between food tracking, fitness and tips and tricks.
I encourage you Dave to create account on that as well.

I record my food etc into my phone and it syncs with the database. I have set routines in the system and just select these each time I do them - time to add in swimming as well!

Between a rock and a hard place
I don't think I can quite accomplish what you have, CG. And I's day I'm also heavier than where you started....
Don't despair too much Blank_Dave. I'm yo-yo-ing around like a mad man. Similar to your story with CG, I'd lost over 90 pounds, and 12 inches off my waist. Then gained back 50. Then lost back 20. Net loss 60 lbs and 8 inches. I'm back on track with a long way to go but at this point I'm bigger than where YOU started. Imagine that for a moment.
