Would anybody know....

what shades of white are typically used in the average apt. I know it is one type and shade for the kitchen, but typically what shade of white would it usually be for the bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms? I want to re-do my boys bedroom all over by myself and match the same paint colouring without having to ask the super. We all know how messy kids can be.

It's not really a shade per se, but a type.

Flat is typically used in bedrooms, hallways, and living room/dining rooms and gloss or semi-gloss is for "wet" areas. It is also typical to use gloss or semi-gloss for trimwork.

As for shade, there are as many shades of white latex as there are blades of grass in a soccer field.....

Don't worry about trying to match it to anything. If you're redoing the room just paint it whatever you want. I use Behr interior latex enamel pure white a LOT but there are thousands of shades you can do.

The only thing you have to worry about (vis a vis the super/building owner) is if you intend to paint it something weird like black or navy blue. I know someone that did that and the building management charged them $1000.00 to repaint it when they moved because it took like 10 coats to hide.....

You could try calling Blinds To Go. They should have a good idea.

That is what I was actually concerned about but if it is off a shade or so of white and there is no problem then great. Thanks :)

hmmmm I think I am going for semi-gloss then and not worry about what type is used in there at the moment. I know that paint in there is ridiculous to clean things off of.

semi-gloss is used in areas that are wet, because those areas tend to need to be cleaned more often, and cleaning tends to buff the paint and make it shine. Having a shiny patch is not pleasing, so get around that by making everything glossy.

It costs a lot less in the long run to buy a better quality paint, than to buy an el-cheapo brand.

and might I suggest NOT having your kids draw on the walls lol?????

BTW: gloss and semi-gloss can be troublesome to paint over without sanding it first. If you do that in the bedroom plan on possibly getting a bill for the cost of repainting......

Thanks T-boy I am listening to you. They're 8 and 10 it is not crayons etc... It used to be though when they were younger. Now it is that they just are so messy finger prints you name it. I have washed it down several times and even marks from wiping appears. Some spots even looks like they had oily stuff in there. Hope not vaseline. lol

I am just betting though that the super would wonder why so messy looking so prefer to do it myself and keep a good rep. So, I guess I will stick to the closet I can find. If it is a tad darker or lighter I bet it will not be even noticeable by the time I move out anyhow. Fresh paint will never stay fresh looking over time anyhow. But, would like it to look just used like the rest of my place and not whatever they keep smearing.

Well Jade, don't worry one bit about changing the colour from "the" white of the rest of the place. The only time you should worry is if there is a clause in your lease that says it has to be "white" and I've seen those.

Heck, I painted a GF's place about 4 different colours (various pastels) and the super/owner saw it and a) gave us some money towards the paint, and b) asked us if we'd be interested in doing other apartments in the building as people moved out.

As for the messy fingerprints, don't worry about the super, heck, every apartment I ever moved in to needed a paint job before we could occupy it and as for oily marks, try TSP (in the paint section of homo depot or any hardware store).

As tough as it may be to paint over, if you really want to insure that the marks come off, semi-gloss is the way to go. It will show the cleaning up less than matte or flat paint will.....

If you want it to look really nice, and depending on how much trim you have, do a white on white scheme: semi on the walls then gloss on the trim. You could even tint the walls warm white (more creamy) or cool white (a drop of blue in a gallon) and then do the trim bright or brillant white. It looks a little stark but is classic.

It shouldn't matter what shade of white you use. The colour can look slightly different from one wall to the next depending on lighting. As long as the lighting isn't too harsh, you won't be able to tell the difference.

yes
eggshell...

if you are really concerned just bring a paint chip you want to match and let the store run a color copy to match it.

most places just use a tint base with no additional color added.

I should be able to find someplace in here that has a place to get a chip hmmmm. The only reason I would be too concerned is because I do not think I would be good at doing ceilings. Not planning on doing that. I know I can do walls myself easily, but I do not want to test my abilities on ceilings. I bet I could but that would just give me sorer shoulders.

Glad to hear all is well with you and yours Jade.......my wife painted her sewing room, downstairs bathroom and spare bedroom all in "White Mountain" (home depot). To look at it ...its white but depending on the colour of the flooring it shows a pink, blue or yellow tinge.....though still looking white. Its kinda neat.

The reason the white picks up the colour of the floor is because white is basically neutral and the light reflecting off the floor will "tint" the walls.

Same goes for light: if you use warm white, cool white, or those new CFLs (compact fluorescent). You see, the light hits the floor and then the light reflected off that floor will have a tinge of whatever colour the floor is.....

Again, I swear by Behr. I've never had a problem with it, it covers well, wears like iron, and I use it all the time for spraying cabinets etc. Their latex enamel is so hard when dry that I can sand it lightly with 220 between coats and get a babybum smooth finish....

I agree with using Behr. If you're getting it at Home Depot, they also carry little bottles of paint odor eliminator. Have them pour it in prior to having the paint shaken. It makes a drastic difference in reducing the paint fumes.

Hey Third, are you thinking what I'm thinking? Sending a woman into the paint department to choose a paint colour? LOL sounds like a whole day event to me lol (being as how they have 70,000 different colours to choose from lol)
