Here's a question for all of you:

What makes a good sportscaster?

I think a good sportscaster is someone you wouldn't mind inviting over to your house for a few hours several days a week: they are polite, charming, and are always aware that something is going on that is way more fascinating than they will ever be.

John Garrett. One of the worst goalies in the NHL and in broadcasting.

Nick Kypreos. Got stanley cup ring only because of great NY rangers team, otherwise he not deserving of one. He always sounds grumpy and wants to pick fights with other braodcasters. Got to be one the most annoying.

There are some great female broadcasters. I like Andi Petrillo.

A great broadcaster is one that doesn't annoy you.

Can anyone explain the appeal of the Tony Kornheiser show? He seems like an obnoxious prick with no redeeming qualities.

For me , Bob Costas, and not because he's pro-american , that's something I expect from him. What I dislike about him is he sounds like he's trying with every single word to sound so professional, get in that perfect soundbite, he just doesn't sound very authentic at all.

GREAT!...more nonsensical ,totally obvious observations with no incisive thoughts or opinions......is Jamie Campell gonna be his sidekick?....guess who won't be watchin Jays game any soon....ME!
Jamie Campbell was pretty bad. Well, he still is pretty bad. I was watching the snowboarding competition two days ago and he was as annoying as he has ever been. However, Buck Martinez is possibly the worst choice they could make to replace Campbell, and he's going to be the play-by-play guy. Ugh!

I think a great sportscaster is someone who you barely even notice is there and lets the event speak for itself.

A lot of sportscasters seem to have the deluded notion people are tuning in to watch them and try to be all witty and charming.

The best in my mind TOM CHEEK followed by Jerry "There she goes" Howarth

Cant stand the nob that does the sports show from RAMA!!!!!!! Likes to hear himself talk so he is louder than the rest.

Cannonating. Scintillating. Need I say more?

Maybe it was just cuz I hated Les Habs, but I used to think he was a joke. Way before my time, but anybody old enough to remember the time he called Milt Schmidt, "Milt Shit"?

Here is a link to some MP3s from the Montreal/Chicago playoffs in 1973. It gave me chills and almost brought a tear to my eye to hear Roger Doucette singing the anthem. Some of you might enjoy hearing it.

Rod Black has to be the worst of all time – practically every word that comes out of his mount is a tied old sports cliche – but worse than that – it sounds like he’s sat down before hand and actually scripted the cliche’s

Best I’ve ever heard were the pair of baseball broadcasters I grew up with – George Kell & Ernie Harwell with the Tigers. Their 40+ years of excellence made watching / listening to many years of horrible teams enjoyable – the Jays announcers for many years have produced snoring.

I vote Rod Black as well. I used to run into him a lot when he was working in Winnipeg 20 years ago. Him and his girlfriend beating little buddy Clay Young have to be among the biggest assholes I have ever met.

In the laboratory.
You may be right. He talked too much before. Now he may never shut up.

I could not have been more wrong. The Buckeroo actually talks much less than he did as a colour man. And that's a very good thing. I think the broadcast pairing of Buck Martinez and Pat Tabler is about as good as it has been for the Blue Jays.

On the highway of life
How the guy that calls the Penguins games........... the rhyme guy ?

" OOOOOOOOH Michael Michael motorcycle" wtf does that have too do with hockey?
Mike Lang, I think he's the best NHL caller on radio. "Slap me silly Sidneyyy!!!" is his best ever. Two nights ago we got "Scratch my back with a hacksawwww!!!". lol It's these little things that make them entertaining and keep listeners tuning in for every game. Try listening to an NFL game on radio and you'll find a few guys who do similar things.
