Have worked in a hybrid environment for over 15 years, IT and R&D, while also managing folks, and dealing with folks internationally

As already stated it is dependent on job type, environment, individual and also the management culture.
A point regarding , the statement that there is less monitoring of workers when working from home. Absolutely false, as there is technology that tracks an individual’s screen time, keystrokes and what ever can be done on a PC, and phone , etc.

In fact the technology is advancing at a rapid pace, and I used to use it to determine statics such that when jobs take less time, the results were used to modify assignment efforts costs etc.
Exactly and the technology has been around for years even decades. I guess some people think that WFH has only been around for a few years?

Nope, I pay them to produce, to work as a team, to be creative and to work with clients and you can't do any of that working from home.
Sure...if it was 1998.

But if you think you're going to force my hand so you can coast at home (and I know you are), then I will fire you and just find a guy in Nicarauga for 4 bucks an hour and get the same result. I can take the savings by outsourcing the jobs of coasters to Nicarauga and save a bundle and pay the people that we do have who want to work in an office and build relationships with clients MORE money. It's a win win situation. We fire coasters, outsource their jobs and pass the savings to the guys who come in to work. Everyone is happy.
Take top talent in your company, any company, with 10-30+ years experience and hundreds of connections in their industry - they want to work from home and your answer is 'You're going to coast and I will just replace you with someone from Nicarauga for 4 bucks an hour'.
