Your Companys onwer is an idiot

Boots last a min 1yr for the inside of a boot! When is the last time the owner worked on the shop floor! What an idiot! Im sure his loffers last a long time due to his sitting on his ass in his office! As for wook boots I have orthotics for mine, and the place that makes them for me tosses in a free pair of work boots! I too am in a unionized work place! however if my guys need boots (which happens often in a dirty oily chemical work place) I either send them out for new ones or they can wait till the boot truck comes in! They are advised to buy the cheapest boot they can get, as we have no limit on the number of pairs in needed in a yr. I can get about 12 to 15 months out of a pair before they are dead and my feet start to ache. Look for sales sometimes Zellers has the Grebs on sale, and with a decent insole you can get a long time out of them, I've still got a pair of those in the closest for cutting grass etc that I use for outdoor yard work.

Owner's opinion of work boots is that they last 5 years and we got $50 once every 5 years if they didn't you are abusing them and with that at minimum wage you were expected to buy quality boots for only $50 only once every 5 years, right.

I have bought them all they only last 2 years max. at the end of the 2 year even the redwings were worn out.

I walk at least 10 km per 8 hour shift sometimes more. Work Boots do not last when I walk so much! The $70 cheapest pair last just as long as the redwings did 2 years.

Yes I agree that they are better but not worth it since I am buying them every year or 2 at the 1 year are start to show wear at 2 mark they are bad looking.

I am looking for Green tag safety boots.

Just thought that I would ask since other people around might know.

My current pair I got on sale a 2 for 1 deal. The two pairs only cost me out of pocket $40 if memory serves. Which they are now due to be replaced. but still as some life in them that was like 4 or 5 years ago.

I will be buying boots every year and stock pile them, If i can get them for $50 each Why should I pay out of pocket when its not necessary, if not I will buy at zellars or wal-mart.

thanks
guys

There is so much wrong with the above ^^^ I'm not even going to bother but anyone who advises on buying the cheapest boot possible, then has to go out and buy orthotics, well, I rest my case.

Keep your eye on Mark's website. They often have sales on at 50 and 60% off their boots. I picked up my current 12" pair (for winter) for $39.99 regularly $129.99. I think I paid $34.99 for the low rise hikers which were regularly around $69 or $79.

As stated, take care of your feet and DON'T scrimp. My dad wore work boots for 25 years and his feet are fucked. He's had varicose veins, knee problems, gout, bone spurs, hip problems all associated with having to wear work boots.

I do hear what people are saying buy the good ones save your feet, and I do agree with that.

This is basically what I am looking for 50 or 60% off deal bringing the good boots down to an acceptable level. If I were able to find them at $50 fine a little more that's fine too, but $300 for a pair I have a hard time the with that and feel that a person can find better deals if they just look, or ask question like does any one know where I can get this at about this price.

Looking for the deals is half the fun!

Just read the thread it's now 3 page long, all from one simple question it certainly a far cry from where I wanted it to head, but oh well that's life!

Hey Jug: just keep checking http://www2.marks.com/ for the sales. Spring is coming so I bet they will have a bunch of non-insulated ones on anytime soon.

If you really want a deal, sign up for their email notifications. Twice in december they had a customer appreciation night where it was 20% off everything in the store (even sale and discontinued items) and the week before they had a $10.00 off card which was also applicable that night.

I picked up 6 work shirts, socks, work gloves etc about $120.00 worth of stuff for $45.00.

If you look at this flyer, the hikers in the middle of the page on the right are the ones I wore while a site super. They were approved by the H&S rep too and a lot more comfortable than boots. They might work in your environment!

Ok...Let's go.
I do indeed wear $300 Oxfords, and wear the Soles out of my shoes far more quickly than the seat of my pants.
Wanna know why?
'Cause of pounding the pavment looking for new work so that all of us...ALL OF US....can eat.
Even ungreatful workers, who have no FARKING clue, how much work is required in managing their teenage'esque dramas.

Anyway...I get no clothing allowance, but am required to dress well for sales appointments.
Six ties= $450
Six Dress shirts= $510
Two Suits= $1800
Every year= $2760.00

OH yeah...Resoled shoes=$100

So stop your whining...and be a grown up an buy your own clothes!

LOL@diode....that's true....now that I'm blue collar my clothing costs have dropped dramatically!

Don't cha just hate it when you get yourself a nice new silk tie, all proud and all, go out for lunch with a client and slop marinara sauce all over it?

Or wear out the pants part of a 2 piece before the jacket?

I finally broke down and went mix n match. That's the only way I could afford to keep lookin as good as I did lol......

And don't even get me started on shoes. I mean, you just get a pair of nice florsheim (or however you spell them) broken in, they are soft as a baby's bum, and then some fat broad runs over them with a shopping cart and puts a big scrape in them and no matter how much buffing you do, you can't get it out? Man I hated that.....

$510 for 6 shirts? Dude, why don't you try winners. I used to pick up $100.00 shirts for $30.00 there.....I was there once and they had a load of Harry Rosen shirts in. Man I scored there......

it sounds like your workplace actually NEEDED/NEEDS a union based on something so simple as safety boot policy!
That's always hard to say. The presence of a union creates acrimony between management and workers that would not necessarily be there in a non-union shop.

A non union manager has an incentive to keep workers happy because it increases productivity and reduces churn. So a boot policy might be approved without a second thought because it's common sense--it may even benefit the company.

In a union shop everything is viewed in light of the collective bargaining process. Even if management ALSO wants a boot policy they'll view it as an opportunity to negotiate and extract some sort of quid pro quo from the union. Neither side will give the other an inch without trying to wrangle some advantage.

Probably the most damaging thing about having a union is the creation of "sides", and the resulting bureuacrcy (and associated stupidity) that arises from forcing even the most trivial issue through a formal grievance and bargaining process.

I'm not an easy fit for shirts, so, places like winners etc, don't really work.
Worst thing for Shoes is driving (wear out the side of your right shoe)
Suits, in the Suitcase? Wrecks 'em.
Fat ladies at the supermarket? Keep a broad distance!
It's the dammed 4inch platform stripper shoes that puts the big scrape on mine!

Boot and shoe tip.

You know how they make you pay $6 or $7 for a tiny bottle of silicone for boots and shoes. Well, here is a secret the silicone millionaires do not want you to know. Go to Walmart or Canadian Tire and buy a liter or a larger 3.75 liter container of silicone. The 1 liter container will cost you about $15. You will find it in the camping department and they sell it to silicone tents. It is the same stuff.
I have had the same 1 liter can for about 5 years and I apply it to new boots and shoes right away ( 3 or 4 coats to start) then after that I apply it maybe every 4 to 6 weeks. Some of my 5 year of my winter boots look like that a they are in their 1st season. If the silicone makes your boots a little dull then go to the dollar store and get a shine sponge, that will put the shine back.

Right. The waste of Time and Money.
People are paid to work. But the grievance process, causes both the worker, and the manager to divert their time and energy from getting things done, to making sure are the little school kids FEEL ok.

I'm sure even the most un-savy worker could negotiate a $50-100 allowance for boots, without the help of Big Brother Union.
No body in managment ( worth their salt, anyway) would think a company could function without workers.
It seems, though there are many workers who think a Company could function without managment.

Boot and shoe secret.

Instead of paying $6 or $7 for a tiny bottle of silicone, you can get it by the liter or 3,75 liter container for much cheaper. Go to the Walmart or canadian Tire camping department and get a can of tent silicone ( it is the same stuff as shoe silicone ) he 1 liter container will cost you about $15. i have been using the same liter container for 6 years and some of my 5 year olf winter boots look like they are in their 1st season. If the silicone takes the shine away, go to the dollar stor and get a shine sponge, that will bring it back.

I get Carolina Laggers or Red Wing Linemans. 100 and 300 respectively. I get 2 years out of the laggers and 3 out of the lineman boots. Spend well you only have one pair of feet.
As papa says "you only have one pair of feet". Spend your money wisely, if you wear these for 8-10 hours a day it can be a very long year before you buy a new pair. $50 can certainly lower the price of a good pair of boots and make your job easier when you are not thinking of your poor, tired old dogs.

Man this "i want breasts" reminds me of a time when I was at Friday's in Montreal.

The Shania Twain song came on "man, I feel like a woman" so I started singing. A french guy came up to moi and said "vous feel like a woman"?? I said Hell yeah, you have one handy? Quoi he says? I said you know, like when you say, Man I feel like a beer? Doesn't mean you feel like a beer, it means you want a beer.....Alors he says lol.

The union was needed we now have side to be heard.
The owner now follows the labour laws instead of breaking them.
Union was our only option.

Things have improved 100% since our first contract got signed.
