Watching Group A matches and forget about the points standings . . I truly believe Japan is playing the tougher opponent ( Norway ) and Spain has the easier path ( Swiss ) . . .

South Africa defeats Italy 3-2 to progress to the round of 16 for the first time. Who could have predicted this? Great result for the winnows 👏

Sweden look the favorites to me. They toyed with Argentina, their transition game is lightning quick and their defense is iron clad. And we still haven't seen them at full throttle, they breezed through the opening round.

The American run of Championships will end in Melbourne on Aug 5th.

Not surprising in the least, La Serie Femminile was strictly amateur for most of it's history. The FIGC didn't take over the running of the league until the 2018 - 19 Season. Like the Wooden Spoon loving rugby Azzurri, the Azzurre have a long way to go but it's a start.

It's not. Common approach to pay in high end jobs is you eat what you kill. They don't bring in the revenue the men do so they shouldn't be paid the same. If the WNBA paid their women what the NBA does, it would be bankrupt. Simpler
But WNBA and NBA are pro league. Nothing to do with national team. Pro league are all about business. National team should not. And the good thing to do as a society is to pay our women and men team equal.

Grosso needs to sign for a premium team in the UK or the US. She saw at this WC that she can compete but she’s not there yet. She needs to play the absolute best league. Jessie Flemming did and is a step ahead.

Question… Who will teach Huitama to be meaner? She’s way too polite. She needs to develop a killer instinct or she will lose her spot on the national team.

22% ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 4 goals. You can't touch this
The Japan coach is currently teaching a woman football lesson to the world.

He shows up a 3-4-3 line up as the game start but just few minutes in and you see the team playing a 5-3-2 or even 5-4-1.

They don’t possess the ball much but they don’t leave any chances to opponents. And they capitalize on their few breakout.

Will it work against the UK, Sweden or the US??

You make good observations. I'd say the 5-3-2 model and the 5-4-1 model will work against weaker opponents. Not sure it pans out when they hit a equal or better team

Principle remains the same. If you pull in way more revenue than another team, why would you want to be paid less in order to subsidize the other team? Plus according to all the reports the national team is all about business given that they've outsourced these arrangements to a business.

I am on my 8th year now as a youth soccer coach. I coach D1 or D2 team. I tough I knew the game because I played good part of my life. By god now I realized I knew nothing until a few years of coaching.

I think Japan will make it very hard for any team to beat them. Even strong team like UK. But I agree with you it might go against them because statistically the team that shoot and posess the ball the most tend to win more often.

The Reggae Girlz (yes, with a z) went up against powerhouses France and Brazil (and also Panama) and did not concede a single goal. So a strong defense is another way to do it. Jamaica progress at the expense of Brazil. Who could have predicted this???

Brazil started Marta. She was toothless. Just like Canada started Sinclair. Players whose best days are long gone being counted on for one last hurrah. Doesnt work. And if the US starts or brings on Megan Rapinoe, it wont work either. Wayward passes, errant shots.

And Canada will play 2 games agains Jamaica in September to get their ticket for next olympic games... Yikes it does not look good!

So much agree with you great players past their prime should enter the game only if needed... Especially if they play forward...

Germany is out! Wow! After Canada, Brazil it’s another big nation out early. France and the US made it but struggled.

Almost each game was a real battle at this WC. Like we see with the men. The rest of the world really catch up snd ghat is amazing.

I still predict Japan to win this WC

Korea was already out and playing just for pride. Still, Germany could not beat them to advance. Insanity!

The quality of play and competition has intensified...no more Meghan Rapinoe strutting like a peacock.

Although I've somewhat lost interest with Canada and Italy out.

Two African countries - Morocco and South Africa - going to the round of 16 for the first time ever. More insanity. Morocco featured a player who wore the hijab and covered her arms and legs to show Iran, Saudi Arabia and other women-oppressive Moslem countries their women can participate in sports while still covering up

First year of watching the World Cup and I admit I did read tons of hype prior to any of the games. I would have to say the worst 3 performances were : ( not in any order ): Can vs AUS , USA vs PORT & GERM vs KOR . Had I owned one of those Back to The Future sports almanacs, 50:1 easy. UGH .
