Window Installation Co. Needed

Ladies & Gentlemen:

I have a wartime house in Oakville built in the 40's/50's. I already put a proper egress window in the basement when I bought it and now want to update/upgrade the rest of the basement windows. It's hard finding co's for such a small job and I want someone good as I've already dealt with some not so professional/experienced contractors. All 5 windows are above grade and I'm not certain if I want to go bigger or not. That will have to be discussed and is partly dependent on budget. I don't mind paying for quality work, I just want to avoid getting ripped off/taken advantage of again.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Miss Sophia Sinclair

I can't recommend window installers, but I CAN recommend window manufacturers.

If you want the best quality, there are only 3.

1. Loewen

2 Andersen

3. Ridley

In that order.

After that, take your pick I suppose. You basically go off a cliff as far as I'm concerned. Might as well go to Home Depot.

All of the above would have installers that they work with.

Loewen are by far the best. Head and shoulders above the rest. Canadian made (Steinbeck Manitoba, south of Winnipeg). Featuring a Douglas fir core with extruded aluminum exterior and wood interior. They are super strong, heavy heavy construction. Without a doubt, THEE best windows on the market. Huge range of colours. They have an excellent warranty and they service their product.

Andersen are American windows, they also have wood cores (southern pine), vinyl exterior and interior.

Without the wood core, windows are not nearly as strong, crap in fact.

Pricing will depend on whether or not the windows can be ordered in standard sizes or have to be custom fabricated. Huge premium for custom sizes, but it's worth it.

Pick your windows on the manufacturer, NOT the installer. Can't emphasize this enough.

Thank You Captain, or should I say judge?

I went with Centennial almost 10 years ago. I was impressed with the quality of the windows and the installation (Centennial uses their own installers). They rated highly in terms of energy efficiency, etc. I have had no problems with them whatsoever.

The only down-side that comes to mind was that the sales lady was a bit pushy. She didn't want me to think about it or shop around; she wanted me to sign on the spot. I almost told her where to put her pen. Beyond that, nothing but high marks.

Landmark windows have had among the best NRCan ratings for energy efficiency. I have also dealt with them with respect to installation. They make their own windows and do a great job installing them. Lifetime warranty that is transferred to the next home owner.

Jeld wen are junk as well. Carried by Home Depot.

Good for a shed or a garage, but that's about it

Can't say I've heard of them, but that doesn't mean anything. Warranty sounds good if it isn't pro rated and includes the hardware.

Hello Everyone:

I wanted to thank all the members who contributed to this thread! I feel it's always nice to hear that ones efforts are appreciated.

Due to unforeseen circumstances last yr my plans got kiboshed but I'm happy to say that I going with one of the co's recommended to me via PM and should have new, more energy efficient and easier to clean windows by mid June.

Next yrs project is stuccoing the sides and back of the house to match the front. It'll improve the overall appearance and make it more insulated. I pay the utilities and tenants never take the same precautions with heating and electricity.

Stay tuned as I'll be needing advice/recommendations for that as well.

Signing Off,
Miss Sophia Sinclair

Jeld-wen windows

There are 3 or 4 different classes of Windows

1 builders grade carried by Home Depot

2 custom builders upgraded windows made with heavier vinyl frames and thicker glass

3 custom arcetechrial windows designed by archetechs. Specifications for your area weather and load

4 custom finishes and materials and or period windows to today's modern specifications $$$$$$

Point is there are windows and there are WINDOWS
