It will certainly help Trump.

Sticking only on the topic of the riots, these things are going to help Trump.

1. Economy - The economy was doing amazing before COVID. Citizens in riot effected cities were just starting to re-open, and many now have lost everything.
Nobody can blame either the virus or riots on Trump. But they can count on him to rebuild the economy again if given the chance.

2. Riot cities - Minneapolis, Atlanta, Chicago, Brooklyn, NYC, Oakland, Detroit, Oakland, Portland, Richmond, and San Jose are all experiencing riots. All these cities also have Democratic mayors.
Hard working people are losing their businesses, their homes, and in some cases their lives. Why do these cities not use every element they can to stop these looters/rioters?
Why is no Mayor suddenly talking about the fear of a new pandemic in their respective city, as thousands swarm the streets?

3. Police - The murder of George Floyd is horrible, and must be dealt with. But these riots are generating hate and violence on all Police as a result. If not diffused, an incident like the 2016 shooting of Dallas police officers is only a matter of time. Trump has always had praise for law enforcement, I think he can help remind people, that though not always perfect, most of them risk their lives daily for our safety.
Another issue that is likely to help Trump is America's relations with China.

Trump correctly called for restrictions on travellers from China when the COVID-19 threat emerged. At the time, Biden and Sanders opposed the ban and accused Trump of racism.

Not going to change opinion much. The riots are going to fade faster than the protests.

I agree with the second sentence. I'm not quite sure about the first. Many people are pissed about the riots/looting. That's why I see mixed sentiment in polls that show sympathy for the protesters, support for the police and military controlling the protests. It's very fluid.

A typical political conversation in public will go like this. "I don't like Trump but..........Biden isn't all there." I think this gives someone social cover to articulate a vote for Trump. Perhaps that's how they felt before the rioting. I don't know. It's very possible no one is being persuaded to change their vote.

Don't say stuff like this. It only angers people. It doesn't matter if the timeline is documented on the internet.

Either way, it will be an ugly campaign. I fear many people at the extremes will get far too worked up.

The rioting is over.
Protests globally are now very peaceful.

They are getting bigger and so are the fences in front of the White House.
Trump is fighting with everyone now, from the NFL to every former POTUS, to everyone that used to work with him.

Nothing will hurt him unless the population actually votes this time.
In 2016 only 25% of eligible voters voted against him.

Yeah, I bet that the Dems are really kicking themselves for not backing a black candidate. Lightweights that they were, Booker or Harris would now provide a sharp contrast to Trump and an ability to earn some credibility. The media would literally blow them the right now. Instead, they have an incoherent walking dead who backed all the "sins of the past" that allegedly led to this.

Sure, Biden is up by 10%, what a poor choice!

People are absolutely looking for social cover to vote Trump. It takes a lot to admit you were wrong and change streams. It's even harder in a highly polarized environment where you feel you are now forced to support stuff you don't want.

But while the riots were big news for a bit, unless Trump can get the cops to provoke more rioting, they are going to fade while the protests will continue till at *least* Juneteenth. The protests are going to be the story people remember. Some will remember the riots but they just weren't as big a deal and won't be unless someone manages to reignite them.

If the vote was right now I think they might help Trump. I just don't see them being a big part of the equation by November.
