Why the new airline restrictions are garbage!

I just landed from a flight from Toronto to the US about 3 hours ago. First to clarify, you are aloud electronics, phones, laptops etc.. on flights. Same rules apply. As for water and other beverages, you can still purchase them in the terminal but the vendor will put the water, juice etc, into a cup for you and throw away the bottle themselves. Still not allowed to carry it on to the plane.

So here's the funny stuff. I'm sitting beside a guy while we're flying. He reaches into his pocket pulls out some vaseline intensive care lip balm. I see him and he whispers to me, "I guess I'm not supposed to have this." We both smile. It's lip balm so I don't really care. But then I'm thinking; anyone could carry "anything" non-metal on to a plane in their pockets. As long as it's not that big and noticeable, the metal detectors check for....METAL. I've seen guys where baggy pants and those pants with large pockets on the legs. And from my experience, all security cares about is what's in your bag in the x-ray and if you beep while walking through the detector. Five guys walking through with five mini bottles with who knows what inside could happen anytime. But wait, it doesn't end there. I reach my destination, and I'm leaving the terminal. I notice a woman walking in front of me has a nap-sack and a "water bottle" in the mesh holder?

WTF? Yea, this is working.

so how exactly are they making sure that no bottles are carried on the plane?
Are they searching everyone, or just asking ppl to throw bottles out?
If its latter, then i'd have to say althought its nice they trust everyone to throw bottles before they board, its not the greatest system.

surprised no1 made a big deal about the lady with the water bottle.

Did you just figure this out? As long as it's not metal, they won't look or find anything on your body.

Not true, last month at Heathrow I was given the option , yeah like you get a choice, of going thru the new body scanner which is apparantly very detaled or waiting in a long line for the std scan plus pat down. The description they gave us made it seem like you should really disclose stuff and poperly empty your pockets before going thru.

After making sure I had thought sufficiently of Dani to plump myself up as much as I could I went thru the new scanner. They would not let you see the images and made sure I didn't hang around the portal to check out the young lady that was 3 people behind me. I don't know if they were doing this in many check areas or whether I by sheer luck got a " test site " one.

Made the process faster and if it is more detailed an accurate then great.

Actually this was the first time I've travelled since the new regulations. I guess I assumed that there would be more detailed checks at security. Besides someone looking in your checked bags for liquids, nothing has changed.

I haven't travelled a lot in the last year so maybe things have changed lately, but every time I ever have before nobody's ever checked me for anything, beyond the metal detector scan. When I was younger, every time I wanted to bring something semi-illegal over the border, I just put it down my pants and never once had a problem. It's scary to think what I could have brought over if I wanted to. I've had customs in a few countries check my bags before, but never once my body.

Yea, the Heathrow pat-down. Remove the coat, belt, shoes.

They were being a lot more thorough on this occasion judging by the waiting line.

The people working the new body scanner must have been tired of passengers inane comments since my suggestion that objects in the monitor are in fact larger than they appear didn't even get a partial smile. ( It was a female operator, I'm no PHNINE)

One of the busiest world airport with flights to middle east, India, Pak'n & other targeted countries, the tighter procedure been in place for a while. The scanner was optional for those don't refuse the pat-down.

Most U.K. screeners I met were very polite, thank me for my time.

My peeve about Heathrow, the pre-mature last boarding call. We abadoned the duty-free goods & ran like mad to the gate, only to find out the plane hasn't even start boarding yet. I know some people like their names called over the P.A. but not moi.

This reminds me of the scene in Arnie's movie "total recall" where everyone had to walk in front of a large x-ray machine....and yeah, I bet the guys manning the scanners love it when a hottie has to go through. Personally I'd turn down the power so it wouldn't x-ray to the bone, but only through her clothes *eg*.

Maybe that's what the bad guys are counting on? Distract the security with a super model while they sneek on a tube of gelled explosive....

Those new x-ray machines won't fly in prudish North America.

Women have already complained about being groped, even by female screeners.

I can just imagine the uproar over government-sanctioned x-ray glasses.

And people simply aren't going to believe that male screeners won't be looking at women naked. There's been enough hijinks with TSA workers (ex-burger flippers) that no one trusts them too much anymore.

Thats why I did high power concentration on Dani before going into the machine, wanted to look my best.
Maybe I should now only fly with my own personal "fluffer"? I know a couple of good candidates for the job...

I agree our personal space is being eroded but I think the terrorists are to blame , no system is perfect but we have to try.

Personally I couldn't give a fuck about "personal privacy" for me or anyone else on the plane. I think survival takes precedent.

Yeah, security of dozens of people indeed should take precedence over one person's privacy problem!

Pretty soon you'll have to go one planes naked.

All this security is a joke. I've had friends drive across the border with trucks and a tarp thrown over a pile of stuff...... nothing illegal or dangerous but the point was that nothing was done to check what he was hauling.

Plus given the number of people that go through an airport.... how thurough do you think someone working an 8 hr shift is going to be.

The whole thing is bogus anyway. Why would terrorists focus so much on blowing up planes when it's so challenging to do so? There are other forms of transportation that are way less scrutinized but which would shut down Western cities to a much greater extent.

And even if they did want to attack air travel, why wouldn't they just bomb the security check points? If I were them, that's what I'd do -- there's no security leading up to them. But a single suicide bomber -- or perhaps a few coordinating to take out a few key points at a time -- would virtually shut down air travel and push the battle line back just that much further.

Think about it. If these "terrorists" we hear about are for real -- and if they're not dumber than posts -- then they're not going to waste their time and energies going up against a door they've already closed. They're going to be looking to push the line back a little, to prove to their enemy how vulnerable they are.

And that means attacking in advance of where security is set up now.

So really, I think it's all a lot of bullshit. Either our "terrorists" have the IQ of houseplants or the whole thing is made up for the masses.

Make no mistake. If the terrorists really wanted to fuck us up royally, it wouldn't be all that difficult to do. We leave ourselves wide open.

Only One Way to Do This

It's clear that all the efforts at airports have been abd remain a waste of time and money. they do not work; no attack has been foiled by the dumbells who work as "security" guards. One must admit that. Everything needed to destroy a plane is easily carried on and undetectable if the components are mixed in flight.

What to do?

Strip search all Arabs and other Middle Eastern types, putting special attention to young males. So far, it's only young guys nmed Mohammed or Ali who have been problems. Get all them first.

Let them and the ACLU bitch.
