I just landed from a flight from Toronto to the US about 3 hours ago. First to clarify, you are aloud electronics, phones, laptops etc.. on flights. Same rules apply. As for water and other beverages, you can still purchase them in the terminal but the vendor will put the water, juice etc, into a cup for you and throw away the bottle themselves. Still not allowed to carry it on to the plane.
So here's the funny stuff. I'm sitting beside a guy while we're flying. He reaches into his pocket pulls out some vaseline intensive care lip balm. I see him and he whispers to me, "I guess I'm not supposed to have this." We both smile. It's lip balm so I don't really care. But then I'm thinking; anyone could carry "anything" non-metal on to a plane in their pockets. As long as it's not that big and noticeable, the metal detectors check for....METAL. I've seen guys where baggy pants and those pants with large pockets on the legs. And from my experience, all security cares about is what's in your bag in the x-ray and if you beep while walking through the detector. Five guys walking through with five mini bottles with who knows what inside could happen anytime. But wait, it doesn't end there. I reach my destination, and I'm leaving the terminal. I notice a woman walking in front of me has a nap-sack and a "water bottle" in the mesh holder?
WTF? Yea, this is working.
