Why Germany Has It So Good -- and Why America Is Going Down the Drain
Germans have six weeks of federally mandated vacation, free university tuition, and nursing care. Why the US pales in comparison.
October 14, 2010 |

While the bad news of the Euro crisis makes headlines in the US, we hear next to nothing about a quiet revolution in Europe. The European Union, 27 member nations with a half billion people, has become the largest, wealthiest trading bloc in the world, producing nearly a third of the world's economy -- nearly as large as the US and China combined. Europe has more Fortune 500 companies than either the US, China or Japan.

European nations spend far less than the United States for universal healthcare rated by the World Health Organization as the best in the world, even as U.S. health care is ranked 37th. Europe leads in confronting global climate change with renewable energy technologies, creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the process. Europe is twice as energy efficient as the US and their ecological "footprint" (the amount of the earth's capacity that a population consumes) is about half that of the United States for the same standard of living.

Unemployment in the US is widespread and becoming chronic, but when Americans have jobs, we work much longer hours than our peers in Europe. Before the recession, Americans were working 1,804 hours per year versus 1,436 hours for Germans -- the equivalent of nine extra 40-hour weeks per year.

In his new book, Were You Born on the Wrong Continent?, Thomas Geoghegan makes a strong case that European social democracies -- particularly Germany -- have some lessons and models that might make life a lot more livable. Germans have six weeks of federally mandated vacation, free university tuition, and nursing care. But you've heard the arguments for years about how those wussy Europeans can't compete in a global economy. You've heard that so many times, you might believe it. But like so many things, the media repeats endlessly, it's just not true.

According to Geoghegan, "Since 2003, it's not China but Germany, that colossus of European socialism, that has either led the world in export sales or at least been tied for first. Even as we in the United States fall more deeply into the clutches of our foreign creditors -- China foremost among them -- Germany has somehow managed to create a high-wage, unionized economy without shipping all its jobs abroad or creating a massive trade deficit, or any trade deficit at all. And even as the Germans outsell the United States, they manage to take six weeks of vacation every year. They're beating us with one hand tied behind their back."

Thomas Geoghegan, a graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law School, is a labor lawyer with Despres, Schwartz and Geoghegan in Chicago. He has been a staff writer and contributing writer to The New Republic, and his work has appeared in many other journals. Geoghagen ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic Congressional primary to succeed Rahm Emanuel, and is the author of six books including Whose Side Are You on, The Secret Lives of Citizens, and, most recently, Were You Born on the Wrong Continent?

Thomas Geoghegan ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic Congressional primary to succeed Rahm Emanuel.

"In October 1993, [I was in] Zurich. I had not been in Western Europe for years, I happened to walk around the streets and I was just thunderstruck by how nice it was. . . . And I thought, how did this part of the world get so wealthy without my knowing it?"
Perhaps that explains it all.

Now then again such statements as
"[we need to] understand how important it is not to run up a national debt." and "Without an industrial base a democracy dies."
make a great deal of sense, however Dr. Geoghegan is living a dream if he believes any significant portion of the Democratic Party also believes these things.

Germany is a major exporter worldwide of high-end manufactured goods - they used to be #1 (maybe still are?). Germans themselves are not enough of a market to buy the goods they produce and keep things going along nicely. High value exports are their life blood. Just as China is the leader exporter of low-end goods, Germany is the leading exporter in high-end goods. Both China and Germany are in a good financial position due to this. China is trying to get internal demand going as well.

Some UK and German firms are starting to farm out some of their production of goods to China now. Workers are protesting, with execs using the same old line "we have a duty to the shareholders to reduce costs where we can", etc.

It is true that to have a strong economy long term one needs an industrial base. One doesn't need a Starbucks on every block and creation of lots of 'service-industry' jobs that do nothing but cater to lazy people who can't be bothered to make a cup of coffee at home before going to work. Manufacturing and industry jobs, if eliminated, spell the downward track of a country/empire. The U.S. still leads in military manufacturing and software development. It isn't a lost cause, but the direction things are going is not good.

This is aboslutely amazing. I was part of a group who met with Deputy Minister of Finance David Dodge in 1993. He said not to say anything but an OECD (and a Canadian province) country was on the verge of insolvency. Can you guess which one?

What a load of garbage. Socilalist love turning out this crap. Just about every statistic in this article can be refuted.

Europe's population- 800 million with 195 fortune 500 companies
U.S. populatin- 300 million with 176 fortune 500 companies
Since liberals don't understand numbers...The U.S. only has 38% as much population yet has 90% as many fortune 500 companies.
WHO is full of crap.....The true measure of healthcare is to compare Caucasians in the U.S. to Europeans. U.S. comes out way ahead.
Confronting Global climate change...who cares?.
More energy efficient...Forced due to higher energy costs.
Unemployment in the U.S. is chronic, but not in Europe?...BS
etc.etc.etc

You again. The last time you pulled your head out of the sand and spouted the same type of inane drivel, you lasted about as long as it took to take another lunge full of air then back you went.

The health care question was discussed in great depth before your membership and your Americentric stance was beaten to death by page after page of fact and figures. i know screw the facts.

There maybe more fortune 500 companies in the US, but that seems to express that on 'bigger is better'. Bigger is just bigger. Since the US has been the biggest economy in the world it stands to reason that there are more 'big' companies. The US economy is very much a paper tiger held up by others; not a real position of strength.

Why exclude non Caucasians in the health care discussions? I guess you think think they don't count. Careful now, your redneck is showing.

Glad to see you think global warming is nothing to care about. That just shows how shortsighted you are in you little fishbowl That also has been dealt with at great length before your time.

You make it sound that being more efficient is a bad thing because it's been 'forced' on someone. The US consumer/economy is the most wasteful consumer/economy in the world. That will change really soon.

Your age, or rather lack of it is becoming quite clear.

As usual, liberals don't understand a simple concept so they resort to race.
Let me explain it to you.
The life expectancy of a Boston Terrier is 2.5 times as long as an Irish Wolfhound.
Is the vet. (healthcare) to blame?.....Of course not
That would be stupid..right?
Is the person a racist who points such a fact out?....... Of course not.

Racist is not the first word that comes to mind, but it's not too far down the list.

Your Wolfhound/Terrier comparison is weak. Why do you think the average Americans life 35% longer than the average larger body type American?

Both the Terrior and Wolfhounds can live a longer better life with quality vet care. Apples and oranges boyo.

First you were sniping at the Socialist and now it's the Liberals that know squatt. Markvee is that you?

In the U.S., Latinos outlive Whites and Blacks. Nature is racist.

BTW: How can any country that invented the iPhone be going down the drain? What is more important in our lives than the iPhone?

Germany is an impressive economy, it has a monolithic culture, people and productive workforce, fascists are very productive and disciplined people after all (and make great cars, see Japan for another example).

Odd that France isn't used as the example, they have a unionized workforce and long vacations....

Perhaps isn't something other than the socialist policies that drives good performance, I've said many times that white gated protestant communities, be they Northern Europe, German or suburban US, tend to do quite well.....

OTB

PS. a few facts:

Per Capita GDP (PPP):

US $46,000
Germany $34,100

US is 35% wealthier per capita

Public Debt:

US 52.9% of GDP
Germany 72.10% of GDP

US has 19% less public debt

Just saying....

France is in for a major shake up not too far down the road, perhaps not at the scale of Greece or Portugal , but it's coming.
