Why are all cab drivers immigrants?

I never understood why all cab drivers seem to be immigrants, and from a certain region. There are hardly any Asian cab drivers, most seem to be from countries in the Middle East or Africa. Is there a particular reason for this?

I don't recall ever seeing a Canadian cabby before.

seems like the indie pizza joints are run by middle easterners now. btw, they run best pizza jt in parkdale is 'pizza nemo' on queen and jamison.

been to an indian restaurant run by chinese. "trimurti" on queen near simcoe. great buffet.

Funny I was having this talk with a cab driver I know last week he is Arabic I think. Cool guy very very out spoken lol. He was telling me about how most of the Taxi Companies in Toronto started from “Arabic” ppl. He was B!t#cing how now a days when you look around most of the drivers are now East Indians, Africans ect… He says the reason why you don’t see to many Canadian, Asian, ect driver is because the original Company owners always get bought out but the employees? I don’t know if that makes any sence but that’s what he said…lol

PF Chang's in the USA. There are none in Canada, and I don't know if they will expand there.

Founded by an American, although it was co-developed by a Chinese partner.

It's a somewhat upscale, trendy place. Every time I've been there, the staff has been mostly white 20-something kids.

a) the pay's lousy.
b) if they are skilled, their degrees or skills aren't recognized here.....
c) they are coming here because the opportunities at home were bleak
d) many Chinese come here to keep their options open
e) cab drivers aren't surrounded with other choices for employment

Actually I've had one white male anglo North York born cab driver. (In Toronto, they're quite common outside of the GTA.) He actually really liked his job... Apparently he just loves talking to folks, loves driving, likes sitting in AC, and liked to smoke... He never considered doing anything else...

IMO they're not any better than any of the other places around there, maybe more selection. Besides, there are so many good roti shops around there, I don't know why you'd bother with pizza.
