Steve Martin's stand up career was short lived but for a time he did rule the roost. There probably wasn't a college dorm in the seventies that did not have his stand up album in heavy rotation.

Women don't hold a candle to men when it comes to comedians for some reason.

Well, there is:

Ellen DeGeneres
Kathy Griffin
Rita Rudner

But, for my taste, I can barely watch them unless there is absolutely nothing else on TV. They're not really hot or anything, and they're about the best there seems to be for women comedians.

Maybe there's a really good female comic that I'm just not remembering; if not, then I agree that there definitely seems to be a lack of quality female comedians.

Yeah in terms of women comics it goes to either Ellen Degeneres or Wanda Sykes. They are pretty funny in their own right. Nothing next to the guys, but funny in their own right.

I always thought Joan Rivers was pretty funny in her time. Before she had her own TV show, she was a great guest host on the Tonight Show.

Yeah Russell Peters is pretty good. He does really good ethnic stuff which is different then the usual white black humor. I wouldn't say he is a pioneer though, but definately funny.

Up 'n comers...

Alot of good comedians have been mentioned...here's a few more:

-hasn't anyone heard of Dane Cook or Stephen Lynch? Pablo Franciso?
-what about Larry David? He deserves some of the credit for "Seinfeld"..."Curb Your Enthousiasm" is hilarious!
-Sarah Silverman! Funny as hell and so sexy!

Personally I can't stand Dan Cooks comdey. I don't know why, but I just don't find him that funny. He has his moments, but for all the hype, I just don't think he deserves it. Stephen Lynche is pretty good though. Sarah Silverman's routine is pretty good, and it doesn't hurt that she is hot.

and Dave...

I forgot about Dave Attell..."insomniac" is hilarious...i wish they showed it in Canada. I miss my Directv.

Phnine, have you seen some of Dane's older stuff, like his Comedy Central special a few years back? Very funny stuff...but you're right, he might be coasting on some of that talent lately.

comedy central clip:

Insomniace tour clip (watch until the end):

Never the safest place
Carlin -- no one else is close.
David Cross is one I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet. I've never seen him in person, but I've heard two CDs and seen two TV shows of him doing stand up, and Mr. Show (or at least the first three seasons) was the best thing on TV in the '90s. Bill Maher is the only other one I can think of that I would pay to see.

Stand up comedy doesn't hold up well for me these days ... most give me "tom green face" ... but yeah, Goerge Carlin & Pryor were among the best ... Seinfeld's writing was good for it's time ... I think that most comedians either borrow from others or are, in part, defined by ground broken by "prior" comedians ... a few old favorites ...

Lenny Bruce
Andy Kaufman
Billy Connely
Sam Kinison
Bobcat Goldthwait
Whoopi Goldberg

Bob Saget should be put in a shuttle with Nancy Grace & launched into space

Sam Kinison I agree with.

As per Bob Saget... Nancy Grace I don't know who she is, but fuck I can always exchange her for Nancy Green - Those Mars Bars commercials sucked! Plus she was a dog.

As long as we are talking shuttle, let's include all of full house and the fresh prince of ballhair, the entire cast of different strokes and saved by the bell (sorry rusty, this was a lame show)

Personally I can't fucking stand that Whoopi Goldberg. She reminds me of a man...or one of the Williams sisters. All man and no talent.

I have no clue "who" you are talking abt, Ref, but I gotta say for a canine to even be compared to humans, they have to have been one pretty extraordinary puppy.

Lets just say, I didn't appreciate Andy Kaufman based on his sexual radiance ... uuuuh ... unless it was subconscious.

PS French Prince kicked ass and Kendra is hot.

I hated Bob Faggot, I mean Saget. LOL That Full House show was one of the worst. I never liked Whoopi Goldberg either. I use to hate when she was chosen to host the Oscars. Billy Crystal was way better, although he isn't THAT funny either, but definately better then Whoopi.
