At first the US were denying there was any involvement.
She had 700 grams of cannabis oil with her. Lots of oil.
Inside UAE, Saudi roles in facilitating release of Brittney Griner
A high-level Gulf source with access to the details of the exchange told Al-Monitor that the exchange happened at a UAE airbase at 5:00 pm Abu Dhabi time (8:00 am
The governments of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia confirmed on Thursday a joint role in facilitating the prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia, leading to the release of US basketball star Brittney Griner after nearly nine months in detention.
A high-level Gulf source with access to the details of the exchange told Al-Monitor that the exchange took place at a UAE airbase at 5:00 pm Abu Dhabi time (8:00 am ET), with the US plane departing Abu Dhabi at 6:10 pm local time (9:10 am ET).
A U.S. official confirmed on Thursday the UAE role, adding that the operational details came out in the last 48 hours. "In the last 48 hours, as this has all come together, Brittney [Griner] was moved from the penal colony, where she was being held, to Moscow. And this morning, she was brought to the United Arab Emirates, where she was met by U.S. officials," the official said.
In a statement, the UAE and Saudi foreign affairs ministries said the mediation was led by UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed and Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman.
"The success of the mediation efforts was a reflection of the mutual and solid friendship between their two countries and the United States of America and the Russian Federation," the statement read.
The statement confirmed that following her release by Russia, Abu Dhabi received on Thursday Griner by private plane from Moscow. Another plane arrived from the United States to the UAE carrying Russian citizen Victor Bout, an arms dealer convicted in the United States. Officials from the UAE and Saudi Arabia were present at the airbase.
The source confirmed that Abu Dhabi and Riyadh facilitated the "details of the exchange," but stressed that the negotiations on the release were strictly handled by Moscow and Washington.
Russia's state news agency Tass released footage from the UAE airbase showing part of the exchange:
The source told Al-Monitor, however, that the subject of prisoners exchange was part of a phone call between UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.
US President Joe
Biden thanked the United Arab Emirates on Thursday for helping Griner return home from Russia.
“I also want to the thank the UAE for helping us facilitate Brittney’s return, cause that’s where she landed,” the US president said.
What happened: Griner plays professional basketball in the Women’s National Basketball Association, or WNBA, in the United States. Similar to other players in the league, she plays abroad in the offseason to earn more money. Griner was playing for the Russian team UMMC Ekaterinburg in February when she was arrested for
possesing 0.702 grams of cannabis oil in her vaping device. Griner ultimately pled guilty in June and was sentenced to nine years in prison the following August.
Griner’s arrest came at a time of high US-Russia tensions just days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Biden administration subsequently began trying to secure Griner’s release. On Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs first announced in a statement that
Griner was released and flown to Abu Dhabi.
Biden said Thursday that
Griner was en route to the US from Abu Dhabi.
Why it matters: The UAE wants to be seen as a reliable international mediator. Earlier this week,
US and Taliban officials met in Abu Dhabi to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
The UAE maintains relations with all countries in the Middle East on different sides of regional conflicts. In 2020, the UAE became the first Gulf state to
recognize Israel and the two have developed close relations since. At the same time, the Emirates maintains relations with Iran. In August, the UAE sent its
ambassador back to Iran for the first time in six years.
Saudi Arabia is also seeking a greater role as a mediator between the US and Russia. In September, the kingdom brokered the release of a group of Americans, Brits, and Moroccans who were
captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine.
Know more: Gulf countries have had an increasing role in brokering mediation efforts that involve the United States. Qatar has played the role of international mediator hosting
US-Taliban talks in Doha, and Oman has traditionally carried out back-channel negotiations between Iran and the United States.
