Please let me know which name brand you prefer for Laptop. My current HP is dying or windows updates is doing it.

I wish I can buy a good laptop and switch the SSD with my own and run Linux on it. But it cannot be done.

PURE CONTROL on Windows.

What do you use it for? I don't game, so if it is Windows, then I like Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 12/Gen 11 or the Dell XPS 13. Apple MacBook Air otherwise.

I used Dell laptops for years but most recently switched to Asus for better durability (metal case).
Not gaming either.

Not gaming. Just Docs, web meeting and listen to music. Play HD movies.

So around 400- 650 total. Hopefully lasts 5 years.
My USB ports are dying and loading is slow - ( thanks windows updates).

I have several old Dell Laptops but if I can install Linux it would be great but I read it is impossible for Dell because of some CHIP set on the MB.

I have two laptops, both about 10 years old, a Sony, and a Toshiba. I replaced the hard drives with 480gb SSD's and installed LinuxMint. They were given to me when a client upgraded. You can install LinuxMint from either a cd or usb stick and run it without affecting your current operating system. If you are happy with the results you can overwrite all or part of your current system.

I've never met a Dell that couldn't run Linux. 🤷‍♂️ I'm not sure why I'm not running into these problems you guys are having
I looked on line it was a model that had issues. I guess Lemmy hates me. Odd as IIRC at the time Dell actually sold Linux boxes, you would figure their line up with be good with it.

Lenovo only for me. Great keyboards.
Me too. I really like the used Lenovo ThinkPad with a 476 GB SSD I got for $350. The display is also a touch screen which comes in handy depending upon what you're doing. l also bought a 2TB SanDisk external SSD so I have plenty of storage.

Currently using a Lenovo Thinkpad SL500 that has served me daily since 2010. It owes me nothing at this point.

I am going to replace my 9 year old MacBook Air.
I am thinking of the ASUS Zenbook S 16.
Yes, need a bigger screen and I can't deal with these small screens anymore making it difficult to see.
Anyone have any experience with this one?

I like Acer. Great value and they last. Use quality name brand parts. Get the best one you can afford with fastest processor and as much ran that's in your budget.

I've been using Lenovo almost exclusively for a few years now and have had no complaints. I love had a new laptop arrive with a GPU issue, but I shipped it back to Lenovo at their expense and they fixed it under warranty. All told it took me 3 days to get it back. At the time I was a bit annoyed they didn't just ship me a new one, but I'm retrospect it's all fine.

I work in technology and need to run both Windows and Linux, and the Windows one needs a dedicated GPU. The Windows machine is managed by my company's IT and the Linux one I maintain myself. Then I have my personal laptop the runs Linux as well. Currently all Lenovo.

Over the last 10 years I have occasionally had a Dell from work, and once an HP. At the end of the day, I think it's largely all the same shit. If you just want to save money, figure out the specs you want, then find then find the machine with the cheapest price. If you want good support, get one of the major brands.

Really any of the brands mentioned here should be fine: Dell, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, HP, heck even a Microsoft Surface is a perfectly adequate machine and they're easy to find on Kijiji for cheap.
