Please let me know which name brand you prefer for Laptop. My current HP is dying or windows updates is doing it.

I wish I can buy a good laptop and switch the SSD with my own and run Linux on it. But it cannot be done.

PURE CONTROL on Windows.
Can't go wrong with ASUS

Used to swear by Toshiba but they went higher end way above what I needed, switched to Lenovo about 7-8 years ago and been very happy, as solid and tough as the old Toshibas. Tried an Acer once, it spent more time busted waiting to get fixed than I used it for work.
My laptops get a ton of use and abuse and I find the Lenovo stands up very very well.

Get a used Thinkpad T- series. They are upgradeable (add RAM, SSD/NVME and even replace screen, keyboard and trackpad). Lots of Linux users on old.reddit.com/r/Thinkpad and that's a good place for research on this specific brand and model.

If you have the money, modern Thinkpad P series are also upgradeable.

I like Lenovo, thinkpads can be bought cheap (office liquidation sales) throw in a ssd and your good to go
I second that. Well built, reliable little workhorses. Mine also has a touchscreen which comes in very handy from time to time. I got mine for $350 two years ago.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8350U CPU @ 1.70GHz 1.90 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)
Local Disk C: 475 GB
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Windows 11 Pro

Plus I've got a SanDisk 2TB SSD so lots of storage space.

I recently bought a Surface 7 with Snapdragon and 16GB RAM.
I am super happy with it.
Amazing performance and it is the only Windows laptop that comes close to Apple's build quality.
