You can have all the analytical skills in the world but without game experience your useless.

For they are the only ones with hands on experience.
I just do not see how analytical skills could be less important for analysis than something else. Is playing in the NHL really so different than playing major junior, that a really smart guy who played major junior would understand less than a moron who played in the NHL?

The brain surgeon parallel is that you are going to ask the other brain surgeons about your surgeon, but they don't know either, none of them has actually had brain surgery. Only the guy who has actually had brain surgery has had the actual experience. Obviously that makes no literal sense, but I don't think playing in the NHL gives some magic understanding. Coaches and GMs need to understand, but my impression is that many NHL players are more like trained animals than like chess players. Certainly when I listen to post game interviews, most of them seem not to have a clue. Not all, but most.

Burke must be doing something right because the Leafs haters seem to be getting louder.

I'm going to chime in because no one has mentioned the following:

*since the lockout (when Phaneuf's NHL career started) he is ranked number one in terms of goals amongst defenseman.

*the same players who voted Phaneuf the most overrated also voted him number 1 as the hardest hitter in the league.

*Phaneuf only received 20 % of the vote for most overrated player, not over 50 or something like that. And how many actually voted? My guess is Phaneuf, who is accused of playing dirty and not dropping the gloves or helmet has a lot of enemies. The twenty percent voters are the ones who had some bad blood against him. Phaneuf plays to hurt, not to make friends which is perfectly fine with me. Maybe they're jealous of how much he makes.

He was on the winning world championship team, was runner up to the allstars hardest shot contest and a finalist for the norris tropy (just losing to Lidstrom).

How you like them apples?

Who's better qualified to judge another doctors work but other doctors in the same field.

Whether they have had the surgery is irrelevant. Patients by and large don't have any operational experience.

It's like I said you have to have played somewhere at a high level to completely understand the game.

A person who truly knows how to analyse the game will draw on their playing experiences.

You are right though that there are many who have played who can't breakdown a game for crap, But the best all seem to be former players.

The question is whether playing in the NHL is more like being a doctor, where you are making a plan and executing it, or more like being a patient, and the coach is the doctor, and you are physically experiencing it, but the doctor/coach is controlling it.

I agree, the surgery parallel is flawed.

Oh come on. Really? So the more people dislike the Leafs, their homer media, and uninformed fans the better they are? Give your head a shake.

DJ, I've seen you post so many anti-Leafs garbage and yet as a Leafs fan, I've never felt the need to post anything good or bad about your Sens. Ask yourself why you spend so much energy thinking and writing about the Leafs. All you do is reinforce the fact to us Leaf fans that something compels you keep writing about the Leafs. You tell me - what is it?

When I saw that poll, that Phaneuf was voted the most over-rated by his fellow union members, it was surprising.

What does over-rated suppose to mean? How did he get singled out among 700 union members?

I think the poll is meaningless.

If Phaneuf is over-rated, then half the players in the league are over-rated. More than half the teams in the league don't make the playoffs, and they the players still get paid millions. Now, that is over-rated.

Leafs will make the playoffs!

Go Leafs Go! Go Leafs Go! Go Leafs Go!

I don't understand why you think it's garbage.
The Leafs currently suck and the Sens currently are playoff contenders.
So why is it garbage?
The garbage actually comes from uninformed Leaf fans who know nothing except what the Toronto Sun tells them.

What he said. BTW you didn`t answer the question. I guess Ironhead was right on the money. No Stanley Cups, on the decline and 0-4 against the Leafs in the playoffs. EAT IT.
