What would you pay for a good smoked meat sandwich?

A really good one? About $15 I guess, although I'm sure I've paid more than that in the past. There's not a lot of really excellent ones here in Toronto though--you've got to go to Montreal.
As a young McGill University student I spent many a nights at Ben's. Swartz was right up there as well. I would give my kingdom to be able to turn back the clock. Those were the days.

I am not 100% sure but I heard that Ben's is long gone and a office tower has been put up on the old site. Ben's had spicy sauce and snooty gay waiters. Celine owns Swartz's now and you can get the factory produced product under the Swartz's name at Costco.
Did you ever do the all night vigil's drinking the bottomless cup of coffee at Lenzo's on Guy street while waiting to dash over to the Forum at 4:00 AM to wait in line for concert tickets? I never did that, but plenty of times I left others at Lenzo's ( around midnight ) that were willing to stay up all night so that they could stand in line. ( I still got the tickets )

I was more a Crescent Street guy. Many a nights we debated the merits/lack of merits of an independent Quebec.

The reason I ask what is a reasonable price to pay for a good smoked meat sandwich is that I heard that an place I have been to twice in NYC is closing down. The Carnegie Deli in NY city is shutting down because it is too expensive to run and the family wants to franchise the name across the US.
FYI - A Schwarts' smoked meat sandwich ( no fries or slaw ) cost $9.95 CDN
This place does a pretty good one for under $10. Two locations in Scarborough and one in Mississauga. I frequent the one on Warden, and have tried most of the sandwiches, all were good. And they sell the best dill pickles I have ever had, Mrs. Whyte's.

$14-18. Or up to $25 for one from Lester's on Outermont. In Toronto the closest I've found is Centre street deli but still, nothing compares to Montreal

I used to live in one of the flats in Outremont. The guy above me was a hardcore separatist but we got along ok. Our house was just 2 blocks north of Trudeau the Elder's childhood home.
How can you be sure you have had the best till you tried Montreal smoked meat. Even the lowest on the rung - the new upstart Pete's meat may be better. Their slogan is " You can't beat Pete's meat".Totally agree!

Just heard about The Carnegie Deli closing too. It was actually closed for almost a year in 2015 for illegally siphoning natural gas.
Their food is definitely expensive, but still very good IMO. You can't forget about the 6 inch thick New York cheesecake.
