What was your first car?

I had my first car at 16yrs old. My grand father gave it to me when he passed away.

It was a Plymouth Acclaim 1994 with less than 30k km when he gave it to me. He died in 2002 lol. This car, since she was almost never driven litteraly broke in my hand. Radiator, battery, alternator, name it lol.

This car was litteraly my hell on Earth. I spent so much student money on this piece of metal.

What was your first car and what happened to it?

A 1977 Ford F-100 pickup truck with cap, bought by me for $4000 in start of summer in 1986. I was 20 years old.
Bought from my boss so he could buy his next truck and we could both have vehicles to work out of.
I worked as an electricians helper, so pretty good money and gobs of hours in the summertime. we met to plan the jobs for the day at a diner at 5:30 am, and often worked until 7pm, and Saturdays and Sundays starting 'only' at 10am.

I came back over Christmas break to work for him again and with that done made enough to pay back all to my mom and dad who had advanced me the funds.

Drove it to and from uni, and would loan it out while at school for others to do errands that needed a truck. Payments came as bottles of rye or rum.

Left it in my dads driveway in 1990 for him to use for as a dump run truck as he renovated the house a bit. I bought a hatch-back Toyota Corolla when I started my first full time job after uni.

The truck still had its uses. But a 1977 truck by 1992 was getting long in the tooth. It was on its second motor and clutch when I bought it, and fourth set of brakes after 250,000km.
Transmission was three speed manual on the steering wheel stalk. Three on the tree as it was called. Straight 6 engine; I could stand on the ground inside the engine compartment when changing spark plugs and engine oil filter.
Not a lot of creature comforts in it to go wrong. But wear steel shank boots on a long trip, as the clutch was tough on the sole of your foot.
Body rust protection in the 70's was not what it is today, and had taken its toll.

But corrosion in the electronic ignition module wiring harness connector would flare up from time to time. Final trip was moving my sister to Uni in 1992. In the way home coming out of a gas station the thing conked and all the usual tricks would not make it run. I called a tow truck and signed the title over to him. Sad day the next day turning in the plates.

My grandfather's 63 Chev Bel Air sedan 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree. He claimed it was an ex Salada Tea company car. One morning on the way to school the brakes failed. Scared the shit out of me but I managed to get there with out hitting anything. I had a friend who was a good mechanic so we borrowed some tools from the auto shop at the school and got the brakes working good enough to get back home. I enjoyed driving the old beast but rust finally finished it.

What was your first car and what happened to it?

The Plymouth Acclaim and its twin Dodge Spirit were pieces of crap. I'm not surprised you had to spend so much money on repairs.
My first car that I owned was a 1995 VW Passat. I bought it used in 1997 for around $16K. Nothing but problems. Had to replace the transmission I couldn't shift into reverse. Then the compressor for the AC went kaput. Several issues with the electrics and wiring. Luckily I bought the extended bumper to bumper warranty or else I would have been out of pocket thousands of dollars.
Learned my lesson and bought Japanese after that. Nary an issue.

Had to have the transmission rebuilt, battery, headlight covers would work when they wanted to, and numerous other repairs along the way. Overall a piece of shit. But was so happy when I got it for the freedom.

1963 Pontiac Parisienne Custom Sport, bought new by Daddy so I could get to the local university. Sadly with the 283 engine and 2 speed automatic transmission, so turtle-like acceleration.

I totaled it a year after I got it, in a bad t-bone accident on the passenger side, all my fault. Only me in my car. Nobody hurt in either car, thank goodness.

Here is a photo of a '64, very similar except mine was silver, and had the stock wheels/hubcaps.

Cherokee Sahara my first stick drive I was 14 and we were on a farm with my mom. Almost crashed it in a tree. I love Jeep. We were taking it out no door and we would trail in the wood with my parents. Got stuck a few times lol

Quebec City was boring but I think for the generation before the 90's if you were not driving at 16 you were late. No need for a car but you must drive. Commuting was not as easy as it is today.
