Well I've lived in Toronto since the early 1960's and for my Toronto is was Corned Beef and Cabbage. Jamaican patties didn't show up here until the 1980's.Clynnog said:I lived in TO from 1972 - 1994 and have never eaten corned beef. I also believe that corned beef is not a staple in Ireland and that Irish Americans started the whole corned beef and cabbage thing for St Patricks Day.
IMHO...Toronto is known for Jamaican patties, panzerotti's and roasted chestnuts (that is going back a bit, but those guy downtown near the Eaton's windows were always roasting chestnuts and selling those candied apples.)
Shhh, don't tell a particular senior Terb member with 8,670+ less than useful posts. He still thinks Chinese food in GTA is egg foo young.DATYdude said:We're probably a good choice for Chinese but the best isn't in Toronto proper, it's in Markham.
Same goes for the Terb poster with 8,670+ posts...hunter001 said:Have you ever eaten in China Town or Scarborough (Shepard/McCowan area)? If you haven't you should.

I remember this, this is the best post but I do not think it is still around. Best one so farCompromised said:Ah, the roasted chestnuts. I remember going drinking at The Underground (a mock up of a London station) where the Eaton's Centre is now, and coming out on a cold January morning and finding 4 or so of the chestnut guys with their charcoal heaters, the bags of hot nuts, and the music.
What food is Toronto known for? None that I can think of. I like corned beef, but it is not a "Toronto" food, it started in the UK AFAIK.
I thought Street meat was slang for street walker LOLMr.420 said:street meat. probably the best in the world. Had it in New York, felt like I was gonna puke. Had it Acapulco, puked and had the runs for 2 days.
