What should the Raptors/Colangelo do in the off-season?

The reports out of LA is that he's a ball-hog, doesn't like the concept of team defence, is terribly inconsistent game-to-game and can be a handful in the locker room. And yes, he seems to average about 65-68 games played/season.
Thats all true. The money is better spent on another player...

Agreed. Maggette is not the player for the Raptors. Like I said in my previous post, Magloire would be an asset even if it was for one year. Maybe he can even toughen Bargnani. I am more of a traditionalist and believe the players that size should primarily play in the paint. I don't mind that players who are 7 feet tall play the perimeter, just not ALL the time.

If the Raptors do decide on drafting a centre, then I would pickup Jamaal Magloire. He is only making the league minimum or around there anyways. He was a steady player in his prime and a very good teacher of the game. He was with the Bucks that year when Andrew Bogut was drafted and helped Bogut tremendously. I had doubts about Bogut when he was drafted number one overall but he is turning out to be a solid player. Magloire was very beneficial to Bogut and I think if the Raptors want to go that route, Magloire would be a good choice and absorb minutes as well.
Only if Jamaal accepts limited minutes and will buy into the team program - the offence, team defence, etc. His problem is that he tends to hold onto the ball in the post too long and is not a good passer, doesn't always play good team defence and he thinks he's an All-Star who can do what he wants on the floor for 30+ minutes/game. The reality was he was an All-Star because the East's centres were injured or sucked.

At his core, he's a nice guy. I played with and against him in high school. However I think he's done as a player. If he couldn't find minutes with Portland, New Jersey and Dallas, he's not going to get much burn with the Raps. He has to accept that as the price to pay for playing for his hometown team, whicn has always been his dream. My real concern would be how he would handle the pressures put on him in Toronto from "friends" coming out of the woodwork... plus the media, etc.

I agree Herodotus. I think it might me be worth the risk for a one year deal to see how it goes. I think this would be his only shot and a very small risk. I never had looked at him as an All-Star. I just thought he was a solid contributor. He has been a very good rebounder in his career and heaven knows the Raptors need someone like that. Limited minutes is a must as the team needs to develop it's current and hopefully new talent. If he could escape the "pressures" of playing in his hometown, then he might be able to turn this into a positive. He has been on 5 teams in 5 years. That is hard for anyone to take. He like anyone else probably wants a little stability.

No offense.... but which roster spot are you going to clear for him? As Herodotus said, I also believe Magloire's playing days are over.... Sure, his contract would be no risk, but I dunno.... I think the Raps could get a move productive player and hire a consulatant to be a mentor ala Ewing in Orlando.

I wouldn't be surprised if Houston is willing to entertain offers for Yao Ming.

He has been somewhat injury prone and the team seemed to have done not too badly without him.

I would give up any combination of players/draft picks excluding Bosh to get him. It would be a lot easier to build a champion contender with a one two punch of Bosh and Yao.

It would also do wonders for the ticket sales with the large Chinese population in Toronto.

It was just an idea to bring Magloire into the fold. Forget about Yao Ming. Too much money and injury prone. They need a centre who will take punishment in the paint. There are no UFA's available that are any good. There are a couple of centres expected to be available when the Raptors make their selection. Personally, I like Roy Hibbert from Georgetown. Solid rebounder with a nice touch around the net. He might be a little slow but he has a good attitude and should be a solid NBA player. There is also Kosta Koufos from Ohio State.

I don't think the Raps (more so Colengelo) will have the patience. Even if that big turns out to be what they have hoped for, it will take at least 2 to 3 years before a rookie big man learns how to play effectively in the NBA.

It's true Yao has been injury prone and plays too soft for a man of his size; but it is also because of these flaws that he may be available. Otherwise there would absolutely be no chance Houston would trade him.

I've read somewhere that playing too much (both for Houston and the Chinese National Team) contributed to his injury problems. He is still young, 25 maybe? Usually a big man doesn't reach his physical peak until he is 28. So with better playing time management and natural physical maturity, he may still turn out to be a stud center that is so hard to find in the NBA.

Colengelo gambled when he traded for Ford. High risk yields high return and I don't think Colengelo will mind taking the chance if he evaluates Yao's potential to be that high.

I think what most of us are forgetting is that there is a salary cap in place. The salary cap is just over 55 million dollars. I am sure it will increase by a small percentage for the 2008/2009 season.

He is scheduled to make over 8 million dollars for next year. They must trade him. The biggest question is whether they will keep TJ or Calderon or keep both (highly unlikely). TJ is scheduled to make over 8 million this year and Jose is a free agent.

Trade TJ and Rasho and a bench player and possibly a draft pick and I think that they will be able to get one or two decent players in return.

Smuddan, Yao is going nowhere. He is worth millions in ticket sales and even more importantly, tens of millions in global merchandising.

Define decent, because that sounds like a poo-poo platter deluxe that you are offering up... and Isiah's not in control of the Knicks any more!

No one wants Rasho (perhaps "The Expiring Contract of Radoslav Nesterovic", but not the player), plus as has been discussed, he's got the player option for 2008/09, so until he makes a decision, the Raps are stuck. TJ Ford's neck (and attitude) are too much of a risk, so you may either have to give up (the potential of) Bargs along with him and/or multiple draft picks. And some might argue that everyone on the Raptors but Bosh IS a bench player...

Raptors are dying in the 3 position and 5. My suggestion is to attain

Ron Artest for TJ + Joey
And watch how john lucas III develops bara in the off season. Bara wont be in italy walking down his neighbourhood, he will be constantly training.

As for the boris diaw case, we do not need him mainly because we have garbo. In the season of 2006/07, raptors attained their 47 wins due to his defence. He can guard multiple positions. As long as he stays healthy and dont injury himself we will have a strong defender.

Rasho shouldnt be signed at all cuz it is just a waste of money. I rather develop Hump as he can also shoot a good 16 footer. (keep in mind his young and he has a big body like "baby davis")

With money left over, we should be able to sign ben gordon, as bulls dont really need him. We would expect gordon's payroll around 6 million also. Udric should also be signed if possible.

Bara/hump
Bosh/baston/Garbo
Ron/Moon
Ben/AP/Kapono
Jose/Udric

weak point is still the centre, unless we get brand or like oden or even alridge(which seems impossible) we can fix that error.

TruWarier can opt out of his contract, so unless you can guarantee he will honour the last 2 years of his current deal, your point is moot. Regardless, Sacremento would not make this trade - they are going younger and cheaper. TJ is one bump from ending his career and Joey Graham is not a serious NBA prospect. Plus Artest would kill the locker room - he is a nutjob (and ballhog) and the Raps don't have strong enough leadership to deal with him.

John Lucas III is playing in Italy. John Lucas (II), former NBA player and coke head, does help train players. But he is barely over six feet tall and is not a "big man" specialist.

BRING IN CLIFFORD RAY! :)

Boris Diaw can defend guards, small and power forwards - Jorge Garbajosa; slow (power) forwards and some small centres. Plus the Raps have no idea if Garbo is ever going to come back and be effective...

I don't care one way or the other about Diaw - he just solves a few problems with one move and is the type of player Colangelo would go for... actually, that may be a bad thing! LOL!

As mentioned repeatedly, Rasho has a player option, meaning HE decides if he comes back next year.

The only problem with Kris Humphries is that he has (relatively) short arms and is somewhat lean. Otherwise, I agree with you... Except for the comparison to Glen "Big Baby" Davis - who is HUGE and has a well-developed post game.

Are you kidding? Ben Gordon turned down 5 years and $50 million from the Bulls and he's going to come to T.O. for $6 million? Beno Udrih has been cut by the Spurs, Wolves and is a free agent with the Kings. He has little upside, is defense-less and is less of a prospect than the Raps in-house solution, Roko Ukic.

Next.

I agree with Herodotus. Bring in Clifford Ray to help out Bargs with his game.

Please don't being in Artest. He is a cancer to any dressing room.

Talk is that Denver wants to shave off some salary so maybe Marcus Camby will be available.

Are you kidding me? Camby is probably making around 8 million per season. The guy is 34 years old and even though he has been a solid centre and a defensive gem during his career, I don't believe this would be a good fit for the Raptors mainly because of his age. To think that the Raptors could have had Ray Allen.

So it looks like D'Antoni is going to the Knicks.

What is Colangelo thinking - keeping Sam Mitchell is a recipe for mediocrity!

The Raptors need some talent.

Bosh needs help up fron but there are many questions that need to be answered.

Will Calderon sign an offer sheet and the Raptors have to match it?

Will Garbojosa be given a clean bill of health?

What position does Bargnani actually play?

The last question was a joke.

What they should do is trade TJ and perhaps package him with Rasho. Rasho is scheduled to make 8.4 million this year. He played well at the end of the season and then Sam decides not to give him any playing time in the playoffs. I know that he was in a bit of foul trouble in one of those games but he is a big body and the Raps could have used his defensive presence.
He is a smart player and applies his craft well.

Sign Josh Smith to an offer sheet if it is within reason of course.

Draft a centre with potential in this upcoming draft.

Starting lineup right now:

C-Bargnani
PF-Bosh
SF-Garbojosa or Moon
SG-Parker
PG-Calderon

Bargnani is not a true centre but he is a 7 footer. Unless they move him to a 3 but then what would you do with Garbo and Moon? Maybe Bargs can be a 4 then.

TJ is damaged goods and has too many years left on his contract to be much of an asset without a big sweetener. Rasho's player option means he can't be traded until 90 days after he signs the contract or December 15, whichever comes first. He may be worth keeping around just to free up cap space unless a team blows the Raps away with an offer.

Josh Smith turned down around $8 million/season from the Hawks and the Raps only have the mid-level exemption to offer, so it's highly unlikely he'll consider Toronto.

There are no good centres in this year's draft and any prospects would be very long-term projects and therefore couldn't produce dividends short-term, which is what this team needs right now. Plus it's so hard to predict how big men will develop, if at all, so it's a total crapshoot that this team cannot afford right now.

Bosh can become a free agent in 2010 and the organization needs to show him they have a bright present and future. A decision will have to be made with Bargs very soon. The rest of the core players are in their prime or are free agents in the next 2-3 years when the centre "prospect" will finally begin to develop.

They can still trade TJ and perhaps a draft pick for a good player. TJ is still a very good player but they cannot keep him and Calderon this year. Calderon must be re-signed. They might have to stick with Rasho this year and then say goodbye.

I wasn't aware that he was offered a contract from Atlanta. It seems obvious he will opt for more money elsewhere.

I watch plenty of college basketball and there are some centres that are of good quality for this year's draft. The Lopez twins out of Stanford, JaVale McGee of Nevada, Roy Hibbert of Georgetown, Kosta Koufos of Ohio State just to name a few. They would be long term prospects but they hace potential. Rasho will be aruond this year to teach the ropes a bit.
Just a thought.

They might not be around when the Raptors decide to draft but I personally would like Chase Budinger shooting guard from Arizona. The kid has definite upside on the offensive side of things but he must improve defensively. Some young players are difficult to teach but he seems to be a quick learner and has the athletic ability to succeed.

I really like Michael Beasley but he will probably be the first overall pick and I don't think that Miami wants to give that up after the year that they had.
It's between him and Derrick Rose.

I believe Bosh will stick around. This is his team and he seems like a quality person.

The Raps should get rid of both TJ and Jose. One can run the offense, Jose, and one can be the scoring first pg,TJ, but neither can play defense worth shit. They need a pg that knows how stop the other guy first,ie a Chauncey Billups type. Hell this whole team needs to learn how to play defense. If Jamario Moon is in the starting five when the next season starts, this team won't be going very far. I'm sure he is a great person and all, but to have him in your starting line-up forget it, you aren't going to the Finals, AND that is the main goal isn't it. BC has been tinkering with the line-up the last 2 seasons, i say you could get rid of a great deal of it this off-season and start fresh next season. They need to get Bosh a legitimate number 2 scoring option, not a bunch of guys that can get 10-15 points per night. Bosh needs someone else who can regularly average 20 points a game so he can concentrate on increasing his PPG. I think there will be a completely different look to this team in the coming season.
