Given that our country needs immigration.
Not so sure that is a given.
If our unemployment rate was very very low, perhaps, however that is not the case
As pointed out earlier, there are a lot of immigrant engineers driving cabs

Does it make sense to bring in more highly qualified people to drive cabs.
It is not good for them

Then there are the immigrants who do not have any special skills
Where are they going to work?

I read somewhere that Canada needs immigration due to our birth/death rates. I'm not an advocate of bringing immigrants without special skills, but I do believe that those with professional designations should be allowed to upgrade their qualifications to our standards (where required) and work in their field. The reason many professional immigrants work at blue collar jobs is that we "Canadians" won't take them. A lot of our home grown blue collar types would rather beat the system than get a career...we are a lazy society in that sense.

No one has mentioned the one really irritating immigrant, someone that comes to Canada and bitches about how much better things were back in the old Country.
Drives me nuts.
Does that make me a racist?

I completely agree! There's nothing more irritating than an immigrant who gripes about Canada. Usually, they are from third world countries, and I think to myself, "Why don't you go back home if you hate it so much here, you ungrateful ********?"

But now that I think about it, they are usually stuck in dead end jobs and miserable, leaving good jobs at home. So some of it has to do with frustration and pride.

My problem with immigration is we bring in people from other countries to help pay into our pension plans and keep up our population growth. But when they do come here they realize how expensive it is to have children so they decide not to have children or just have one, thereby causing us more problems!

Generally I don't have an issue with immigration however, I do have an issue with those who come over with a sense of entitlement. I was reading this bleeding-heart article in the Star a few weeks ago that was bemoaning the plight of poor immigrant seniors who come here and live in "poverty". Basically, the article was telling the story of seniors who arrive here from another country and so are not entitled to a pension or other such benefits. So essentially the article was implying that we Canadians, who have been working in Canada and contributing to the funding of its social programs, should now support anyone with enough money for fare to Canada.

Another issue I have is when they send for the sick grandparents who then become a burden on the healthcare system and who again have not paid dollar one into it.

This country was built by immigrants but I do take issue with those who feel entitled to more than they have contributed.

You can't fault anyone for doing what is perfectly legal to do.

If you really are upset about this issue raise it with your MP and in the next election make it one of the your voting points. If enough people do this the politicians will change the laws and require maybe a sort of an income trust fund or something like that for new immigrants.

I read someplace, I cannot recall where that in the days of the baby boom immigrants were badly needed to make more homes, build streets, teach in schools as our population was mostly now younger in age. Daycares were needed more and all this had to be built and people to run them and for the most part Moms back then stayed home. At this point and time employment was readily available in real estate etc... It also stated we are now in a situation that population keeps climbing and that jobs are not as easily to find. I forget the stats and all the information, but did find it informative at the time. Now immigrants do have more children than what we longer standing citizens of Canada are having. I guess our baby booming days are over.

Perhaps all the unattractive people from the Indian Subcontinent do immigrate to Toronto, but there are some very pretty women there!

Anyone who appreciates what Canada, and what it has to offer is most welcome by me.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who do their darndest to get here and then constantly dump on Canada (it's too cold, the food sucks, the _____ is better where I'm from, people are too socially liberal, Canadians like a stupid sport like hockey and not a real sport like soccer, etc) and you know they just want to use Canada to their economic advantage that that's it. Those folks are not welcome in my book.

Imagine if Canada had a strict immigration policy and only let in people from Sweden, Holland, Brazil, and Argentina instead of only letting people in from China, Pakistan, Phillipines, and Iran.

What a beautiful country we'd live in.

True, but at least then we can say that Toronto is a city full of beautiful women. With all the mass immigration from the countries listed above, Toronto is not that pretty anymore. :(

The very fact that you think it would "open too many cans of worms", even in light of the things that have already been said...kinda leans in that direction.
I have seen enough of your posts to get the impression that you play the race card all too readily. But then, if I'm not mistaken, you're from a minority race that has been subjected to much racism. I can't put myself in your shoes, but please, just because you've been subjected to this racism doesn't mean that racists make up most of the majority race. There are some very important reasons to oppose immigration that have nothing to do with racism.
