Tell me Simple Simon, why do you think that is exactly?
cuz toronto thinks it is something incredible and over charges for the chance to live there. over priced shit hole.

and live half the life
so you think mississauga, brampton, oakville and burlington are considered living half the life of toronto ? explain to me what you can get in toronto you can't get in those cities. over blown joke of a city.

and live half the life
damn I have to agree with simon, I preferred living a few hrs North of Toronto. It is easy to drive to Toronto to experience what you want there; it is great to wake away from it.

Just my preference.

To each his/her own. I grew up in the burbs, which are great for big box shopping and eating Chinese or other ethnic food.

I far prefer living in the city, on the subway line, where I can drive to work in 15 min, or catch a leafs game and be home within 30 minutes after the Buds lose in spectacular fashion.

If we decide to ever settle down in Toronto, I think we will either have a Condo around King and YOung or a place in in the country. The burbs are just not for me.

Home ownership is so overrated. I still rent and have absolutely no regrets. I am confident that my net worth will exceed anything I would have gotten had I owned a house. If you look at house prices over a 20 year period, yes, home prices have gone up very nicely. However, if you were to invest in the stock market over the same period, you will see that the market easily out performs house values by a landslide.

Yup. We have a house now because we need the space and it suits our lifestyle. But, I've resolved that once the kids are out, we go back to a condo (preferably on QQ). Traveling with a condo is so much more convenient....along with condos in Hong Kong and somewhere on the continent, too lol.

My guess is many of us don't understand the meaning of net worth. They've probably included the market value of their home without deducting the mortgage on it.

why would you deduct. it takes away from your total and makes you appear to be less of a person.

i look for places that are all inclusive in the rent. i would rather just pay one person a lump sum and never have to deal with shit. it just seems the better way to handle it and if the market crashes i don't have to worry about anything. to much risk and stress for owning a house. same sort of thing with work, boss asked me if i wanted to buy my truck i was like fuck no, if you don't want it why the fuck would i.

My place is all inclusive and also includes cable and parking. I only pay for phone and internet. Best part of renting is I can choose to leave the lights on...not that I do ;)

thats assuming everything is paid for ,a few hundred grand can be generated
I can point you to about 6 billion people who'd think that having a net worth of ~$10k would be enough to live nicely for the rest of their lives. Using your metrics for what would be a nice life for you would not necessarily be a nice life for others.

Chris Rock put it well: "If Bill Gates woke up tomorrow with Oprah's money, he'd jump out a f****** window."

Just because you would be happy with it doesn't mean everybody else would be.

Why not if it's paid off? It was a great feeling to close that mortgage account after 10 years.
I think people have an issue with real estate, particularly the primary resident, because it doesn't generate income per se. If, however, you sell your house and use the funds for investing, then it represents a net worth that is part of your investible assets. Makes sense ???

my mom did good. she got a house at an auction for some guy that didn't pay his taxes. 21,000$ for a 2 story 3 bedroom house. 2 acre corner lot. sold it for 65k like 15 years later, moved into a house that cost 80k and is now worth 160k. she got lucky a few times over.
