For eating, Braeburn. For a pie Granny Smith. If you can find heirloom varieties of apples, the Grimes Golden makes a great apple pie.

I can’t believe all the hate I’m seeing in this thread for Red Delicious Apples- They’re the best!

Honey Crisps are nice. With all the precipitation last year around here in the fruit belt the apples were abnormally large, crisp and juicy. A grower gave me five Honey Crisps that were over a pound in weight each, picked that morning.

The best apple by a long shot is Cox Orange Pippin. (holy s%$t, I agree with Aardie)

Also Ingrid Marie, Gråsten and Belle de Boskop

Northern Spy are supposedly the best baking apple but I like them for their tart taste. They're a late season variety and I switch to them when the McIntosh apples begin to go soft.

Heirloom ontario apples: Snow or McIntosh for eating. Tolman sweets were an addictive taste. Bleinheim orange for pies.
