This thread is a companion thread to the "How do you set yourself up to be rich/poor?' thread. This discussion came up when I was having lunch today with a few workmates today at Subway. The guy in front of us had a 12 in. sub. chips, soup, cookies and soft drink. His tab came up to over $25 He did not finish his meal and threw away more than half. All our tabs came up to $7-8. We all agreed that that guy was setting himself up to be poor. Two guys at our table has a 6 figure income. The others do very well. On average every day lunch spending would be $7-8 ($10 or less most of the time ) Not counting special occasions. How much do you spend on lunch?

Maybe that guy makes lots of money and can afford to throw away food like that. I hardly ever throw out food.

Zero. Take food when I need to. And make lunch for the SO as well.

The key is to make lots of leftovers.

zero at work, as I take a home cooked meal to work.

On my day off from work, I will treat myself to lunch at a restaurant, that usually runs about $25.00

I never bring a lunch. I will go fucking insane if I stayed in the office every day.

I usually head out to any number of places, or to the massive mall close to my office to people watch.

So to answer your question, on average 15 to 20 bucks a day.

I can go for a quick, cheap double cheese burger at McDonalds for under $3 or just grab and apple or banana and go for a massage which costs considerably more.

Or maybe his lunches are a either a tax deductable expense or paid for by his company and he really doesn't care.
I rarely eat at fast food restaurants so my lunches are usually $30-50

I rarely bring my own food. The only time I do is on bad weather days when I know it is difficult to get out. On usual days I spend $7-10 on lunch. There are days when we go out and have something special like at a Chinese restaurant. I might order a Cantonese chow mien that is too large for me and take a doggy bag for home. I do not eat fries anymore and stay away from dispenser soft drinks as they taste watered down. One ting I do not like is to get a burger that has been sitting on the rack and has cooled off. When I go to McDs I ask for 2 double hamburgers. Not many people ask for them so they make it hot for you. I bring a jar of Dijon mustard and a jar of wine sauerkraut to spice it up and eat it in the car.

Or maybe his lunches are a either a tax deductable expense or paid for by his company and he really doesn't care.
Just because someone else is paying is not an excuse to get slimy and wasteful.

What a shame that people waste food without a thought while there are people that rely on the food bank.

I either go home for lunch (5 mins from the office) or buy some buns from a Chinese bakery, $2-3.

I see co workers buying lunch, let's say that costs on average of $10. That works out to approximately $2600 per year.

How the hell does that cost $25? He must have loaded up on extras too.

Depends on the day and where I am. If I'm at my regular office, I bring food from home. Obviously if I'm out and about, which is about half the time, I'll have to eat out. Sometimes that means ~$10, but can mean as much as ~$30. If I'm out of the country, my work picks up the tab.

Good thing he threw away more than 1/2. That's like at least 1500+ calories. For lunch. About 2/3 what he needs for the day (much of it simple carbs).
