What has Canada done for the world...?

I think we should definitely be proud of our ancestors military contributions, but by no means should we claim them as our own.

Our military is a joke. The USA would roll over us in 10 seconds if they were so inclined and everybody knows it. They just won't admit it.

Personally I find the general Canadian attitude towards Americans ill informed, and disrespectful at the least and downright hypocritical in many respects. Our high standard of living is because of our relationship with the USA. Who do you think buys all our shit?

One thing we might be leading the world stage in is the "obnoxious tourist"

I have been all over the world, and I cringe every time I see the Canadian tourist uniform. Pin on hat, flag on backpack, truly believing that the whole world loves them because of where they're from.

*NEWSFLASH*

They do not. You are an embarassment.

Spare me the "time I was in Belgium and they were rude to me until..." and the "Americans buying Canadian disguises" stories, please.

Our country has contributed many things to the world, but can we please stop bending and stretching the truth and facts about it?

Basketball - invented in Massachussetts BY a Canadian. Not in Canada.
Alexander Graham Bell - Not Canadian.
Burning down the White House - British Army (who were willing to abandon Canada if the US attacked again)

I think it is time to lose the little brother syndrome.

Trying to be as good as America and at the same time trying to make sure the whole world know you aren't American.

One more thing, hockey is an afterthought in every other country on the planet. We pride ourselves on being good at a game that nobody else cares about. Even in "good" countries (Czech, Sweden, Russia...) hockey is #2 at best.

Uhh...

Canada has demonstrated that all the people of the world can live under one roof with relative peace and harmony and maintain their respective beliefs, customs and traditions.

Yeah, I know no one values this, but we do it better here than in the entire world (which is effectively the same thing).

If there was a world government, the state of affairs in Canada is what they should aim for.

Anyways...

Probably we're all better off killing each other. If only we would properly kill everyone and put an end to all problems...

Sigh... :(
Another example of the big Canadian group hug?

we have a heritage history from the way we understand about freedom and fair, and the country of Canada did sacrifice for it. the problem i can see not we are taking more influence from south side of boarder than we should, and we are loosing our tradition.

The world's first completely digital telecommunications switch in the early 1980s. It put nortel ahead of the competition by 3 years and based on that nortel was a success until 1999.

Look, the sorry fact is that while Canada has certainly done positive things for the world, it is not equal to what the USA has done.

But, you need to provide your friend with a few further facts:

1. Canada is less than 1/10 the population of USA--it is an appreciably much smaller country with much less resources (people, money, industry, military etc. etc. at it's disposal) and if you divide the American positives by a factor of 10 things start to look much more equitable
2. While Canada has essentially had a positive role on the world, the USA has ALSO had many significant NEGATIVE influences on the world (The war in Iraq is a perfect example--it would never have happened without American aggression, it was a war of choice not necessity (no 911 connection, no weapons of mass destruction--think of the hundreds of thousands that needless died here)
3. there is no question that Canada's positives outweigh any negatives, this is a bit debatable with the USA (consider the widespread Anti-American sentiment that you find in several countries--there are reasons for this; or why some Americans traveling in Europe actually like to identify themselves as Canadians)

Alexander Graham Bell was not a Canadian. he happened to live in Brantford for a short time but that's about it for his Canadian connection.
He did live in Upper/Lower Canada colonies for sometime, probably from at least 1870 until his death in Nova Scotia in 1922, not particularly a short period of time. As for citizenship, well Canada didn't exist so there was no such thing. I'm not sure whether he ever did become Canadian as most people with British citizenship could vote etc in Canada .... in fact I'm not sure if they grandfathered everyone in as Canadian upon confederation. In fact Scotland claims he was a citizen there and therefore a British subject. At no point was he an American citizen that is clear.

Some of the confusion comes from the fact that in addition to his lab in Brantford he also had one in Boston which contributed a lot in the development of the phone. Also most of his experiments were financed by American investors but it was very clear that invention's completion was in Brantford. So I guess both Countries have a claim but I lean to where it was completed.

Another argument is that he patent the item in the US. Well that's some what true however the first patent was in Great Britain but since GB had no treaty recognizing patent rights with the US , Bell and Co. had to secure rights in the US.

Hey Canada. Your army still taking the year off so the soldiers can recover? (Both of them that is) LOL.

Canada is basically an American satellite. Be a good bitch and run along.
Another chirp from the cheap seats, yet entertaining no one, but himself.

Yet you feel the need to respond. To quote Tucker Carlson. "Without America Canada is basically Honduras except colder and a whole lot less interesting"

That's an insult actually...to Honduras.

Wow, quoting Tucker Carlson. Talk about scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Canada is a great country, at it's best when not viewing itself relative to the US.
